What were the big mess-ups about the Man of Steel movie?

I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death on here one way or another, and I'm sorry... I'm just curious

I can't really gauge the consensus here... Is it a good movie, or a bad movie?

I hear good things, I hear bad things... Superman killing Zod doesn't seem like a big deal to me, but a lot of people seem to hate it...

The darker tone it takes was clearly influenced by the Dark Knight movies, but it gave the movie a "Year One" kinda feel IMO... And at least they didn't shroud the action in darkness, you saw everything in broad daylight

So what in your opinions did the movie fail on, and what did it do right (specifically the stuff that wasn't right out of the comics)?

@mikex20:

It not just the rescue dog but his dad just stands there waiting to be killed. That is mess up what kind of lesson is that is letting yourself be killed in order to protect your sons identity.

In my opinion its a good movie.

This thread will turn into a Marvel vs DC wankfest though.

1. Bad pacing, for example, Superman is being detained by the cops and says "screw this, I'm leaving' then BOOM jump cut to him and Lois back outside...wow.

2. Jonathan not dying for a dog, but rather standing there while the tornado slowly approaches him, yeah, his leg is messed up, but damn, limp your a** out of harm's way.

that's the only gripes I have with the film.

PS-Amy Adams knows how to wear a pants suit, mmm.

The number one thing I take into consideration, and I think Snyder is on record saying this... This is Superman's first adventure... E.g. He didn't know exactly how to be the Superman that we know and love...

Most of the big mistakes the movie makes can easily be used to a learning point... I'm sure there's going to be a trial in the next movie... I'd bet money on that... Then he's going to learn to avoid the devastation they went through in the first film, the trauma from killing Zod could explain why he doesn't just punch a hole in Lex Luthor's head...

Ya get what I'm saying?

I actually loved the movie. Dont see where all the hate is coming from. Superman was supposed to kill Zod. it gives him a reason to never kill again in MOS2 and future films.

I thought it was good. It's actually the only superhero movie I've seen thus year. But I don't all this hate. It did its job, it reintroduced Superman back to mainstream audiences and established an potential DC cinematic universe. And people now complaining about that Batman in the sequel will just make it worst. Batman was going to appear within the universe sooner rather than later, get over it!

The movie lacks any real depth, all the characters are simply archetypes to play a role in the overwhelming amount of themes in the movie.

Lack of character development and bad pacing are my only real problems with it.

Didn't mind him killing Zod at all personally.

What did bother me was was that "Superman" in the movie acted emotionally detached and didn't seem to even remotely care about anyone bar his suicidal, dimwitted, selfish father. He wasn't idealistic, or optimistic either, he was just a miserable, brooding loner living in a bleak, cold, harsh world of destruction. There was also no chemistry between him and Lois at all, their relationship was one dimensional and painfully underdeveloped, heck there was barely any warmth between him and any of the other characters.

@silent_bomber: some of those are legit, but they wanted a more human flawed Superman here.

It was boring, the pacing was bad, and the director doesn't seem to understand the whole concept of 'rising/falling action'.
