I think it probably took influences from several books.

Jor-El quotes All-Star Superman almost verbatim when Clark is first learning how to fly.

need to read all star, if you replace the bad guy in Earth One #1 with Zod it would be really similar "surrender yourself" "trying to destroy the earths core" that is what these guys do is just lift the choice comic stuff

NOW! that's a superman story!!! I just read earth one, it was amazing. It's not "thee" definitive origin of superman, but its so cool. and Man of steel definitely steals some material, but it did that with a little everything.

Glad to here that from you, I was just asking if the book was worth reading in the battle forum.

@monsterstomp: it definitely is worth the read. It's superman for a modern age, but looks classic. and his really similar to man of steel, but has some big changes too. man, it was good...

me to, I loved the "your the answer to are we alone in the universe" and of course the All-star reference. And the "I want to be your son" from secret origin. they all just meshed so well IMO.

@allstarsuperman: Know any other good Superman material?

Origin stories:

  • Birthright
  • Secret Origin
  • Man of Steel
  • Action comics 1-8

I actually enjoyed H'EL on Earth if you haven't read that yet.

And the whole:

  • Superman: Brainaic
  • New Krypton 1-4
  • Last Stand of new Krypton 1-2
  • War of the Supermen

but that's a lot to read, I enjoyed the whole thing though.

Are you new? :o

Never really followed Superman intently. I know enough to put up arguments for him though. I prefer street levellers. But I'm really looking into powerhouses again.

Nope, main influences I see for Man of Steel are rooted from Birthright and Last Son. I can see how Earth One makes an impression though.

I'd say a couple of sources. The main three that comes to mind is Birthright, Earth One, and All Star Superman.

@monsterstomp: Yeah, man, I didn't see them in here, but check out the Batman/Superman Series, there is Absolute Power, Supergirl, Torment and my fav, Public Enemies. They even based a animated movie after Public Enemies and almost recreated it shot for shot. Those books are pretty incredible and the artwork is just out of this world on Public Enemies in particular. Really great stuff.

MOS Superman was just Bryne's Superman.

I recognized a couple of things from All-Star, through mostly MOS gets its inspiration from Superman Earth One and Birthright IMO.

The plot of the film is pretty much E1. I don't like it that much, more of a Birthright fan. In E1 Supes takes a couple robots out, but waits until Jimmy's about to get himself killed spouting out idiocy (exactly what truth are you dying for, Jimmy?) or as I've heard someone else say 'he kinda stood around till he was really feeling it'.

Me personally, I wish MOS had taken a tiny bit more inspiration from Birthright. I wish they'd used the scene where the life support in Kal's rocket starts failing. I loved that he almost didn't make it and it's intercut with him trying to catch a bullet. And the parts where he travels the world, they were more interesting than the movie version. The only thing E1 really has is the alien invasion angle, which Goyer lifted and made the villain Zod as to make for a better story.

I thought both volumes of Superman: Earth One were pretty dang awful. However, I'm not a fan of OGN's in general because they're inevitably shorter than a six-issue story arc and therefore cannot contain much story. However, I thought Geoff Johns' Batman: Earth One was very good. I'm gonna give future Earth One books a shot but both of the Superman ones so far just aren't for me. I thought the Man of Steel movie was amazing though.
