..would Superman have to go before he started to lose his powers? I mean he needs a yellow sun doesn't he? I'm not an expert on astronomy, but wondered how far he would have to travel before his powers start to wane...

He's a battery. So as long as he doesn't fight or get near a red sun he can go for quite a while. I'm gonna say a few weeks.

The nearest star from our solar system is the Alpha Centaury located at 4,5 light years away from here so it would take Superman 4,5 years, traveling at the speed of light to get there. He would die halfway

Nothing's faster than Light and Superman's not the Flash. They really need to set limits as to how powerful he is and work within those limits.

@foamborn: Nothing is faster than light in the real world the comic book world only loosely follows our laws of physics. Also you are right Superman is not Flash but that doesn't mean he can't be faster than light.

Why would Superman need to be faster than light seriously, light travels at a speed far in excess of the ones Superman needs.

Being near a red sun just means he can't replenish himself and is pretty much akin to him being deprived of sunlight in general. Except that when you hit him with red sun blasts, his body loses yellow sunlight and absorbs the red, which would account for the increase in pain received from continued attacks and decrease in power level.

@thanosismad: depends on the writer. Sometimes it takes his powers away immediately

Super girl was getting depose red when fighting on Pluto so the same should be true for current Superman barring his Doom powers.

Which is PIS, Superman doesn't normally fly at 200x the speed of light, that's flat-out ridiculous like the size of Brainiac's mothership, just lowest common denominator creative diarrhea #dealwithit

It depends.

In pre-flashpoint versions, it varied from him being able to sustain himself indefinitely due to cosmic radiation, to him starting to lose his powers after a few weeks.

In the New 52 however he has never shown any concerns of leaving our star system. In fact it seems that has long has he doesn't get exposed to red sunlight, his powers don't even diminuish. And seeing that in the New 52 he can move at many times the speed of light, even if he needed solar energy he could simply reach any star.

So for now we can safely assume that he can sustain his powers forever. At least in this more current version.
