I've always been more of a Marvel guy, but lately I've really been getting into The Man of Steel by reading 'All star Superman' and Some of the new 52.

Could anyone make some suggestions for me?

I'll start with the elseworlds: Kingdom Come and Red Son are topnotch.

As for canon (at least was canon), I'll suggest the arcs towards the end of "Old" 52. The arcs in order are:

  1. The Coming of Atlas
  2. Brainiac
  3. New Krypton
  4. World of New Krypton
  5. World Without Superman (You can skip this as it is a side-story)
  6. Last Stand of New Krypton
  7. War of the Supermen
  8. Grounded (But I suggest you skip this if you don't want to be bored)
  9. Reign of Doomsday (Last arc of Post-Crisis/Pre-Flashpoint Superman)

@calvalier: No worries. I did forget some essential Superman readings though:

Early Post Crisis Arcs that are worth mentioning are 1985's For the Man Who Has Everything, 1987's The Greatest Hero of Them All and 1998's Superman for All Seasons. The last one is a deep yet light-hearted take on Supes. Another arc worth reading is a one-shot called "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?" in Action Comics 775. If you've watched the recent animated "Superman vs the Elite", that's where the story came from. And if you want the best Superman origin story (regardless of canoninity), read Birthright. You want an emotional and near emphatic origin story? Read Earth One.

  • Superman: Last Son
  • Superman: Brainiac
  • Superman: For Tomorrow
  • Superman: Earth One
  • Superman: Secret Identity
  • Superman/Shazam!: First Thunder
  • New Krypton
  • Superman: War of the Supermen
  • Superman: Reign of Doomsday
  • Action Comics (New 52)

If you'd like to read some great Lex Luthor stuff that has bits of Superman in it, I'd also recommend Superman: The Black Ring and Lex Luthor: Man of Steel

@ssejllenrad: I'll take your word on Birthright...I've always loved origin stories.

@the_tree: does black ring have anything to do with the black lanterns?

#8 Edited by The_Tree (7063 posts) - - Show Bio

@calvalier:

Kind of.

After getting a taste of what it's like to wield a power ring in Blackest Night, Lex goes on to try and regain such power. He begins to study the energy of Black Lantern rings, believing that they'll give him power akin to what he held during Blackest Night.

Wasn't Grounded that arc that was panned (and for good reason?)

@hewhosees: Yep! Exactly why I suggested to skip it. :D
