Spiderman is said to have the proportionate strength of a spider, there fore being able to lift some 15 tons. Spiderman has never been considered a top class hero such as iron man, thor etc... So was this character over powered with his 15 tons of lifting? or is he underrated and should be considered a top A class hero? What do you think?
Spiderman underrated? or overpowered?
neither
it's not always about strength....but...coupled with his agility, speed, and spider sense Spider-man is very powerful....he may not be the strongest person around but he can hang with some of the best
He's neither, unless someone thinks he's overrated or underrated. To be honest, that's just opinion.
Blue Marvel is one of the more powerful heroes in Marvel, but I don't think anyone would consider him an A-list hero.
If Spider-Man is overpowered with 10-15 tons, what does that make Hulk? Thor? Superman? Sentry? Ms. Marvel even?
@hart7668: @monsterstomp: @wolverine08: @danhimself: of course superman and hulk and thor are WAY overpowered... inhis current series supes can bench more than the earth according to a machine... but you have to realize how powerful that is... and for a character like spidey to be that strong is ridiculous

Superman and Thor aren't "overpowered". That's a clichéd myth.

Superman is only overpowered if you want him to be. Fact is, he has tons of villains that could put him in the ground.
@monsterstomp: you mean "he has to have"

I don't even understand this
@wolverine08: how so? 150 billion tons was lifted by hulk on the cover of a secret wars issue, for his SIZE thats ALOT! and superman well.... read, writers should tone it down
@warlock360: He has to have tons of villains that could put him in the ground.
Na I like what I said better :P
@jackbensley777: Superman benching the Earth is impressive. Though Helspont still smacked him to the moon with ease.
I wish that Superman Earth scan would go away, I'm tired of seeing it, lol. But to answer the question, nah, Spidey's fine.
Spiderman is good at the 3rd best superhero spot you wont pass Superman and Batman they have been around forever so no he is not underrated at all actually he is the most well respected hero these days you never hear complaints about him. And no Spiderman is not overpowered at all he has flaws which make him an even likeable character. Basically don't fix what's not broken
Spider-man is a pretty balanced powerful character in my opinion. He has a very unique power set and this lets him beat a lot of characters. Basically he can beat just about anyone up until the tank class characters, I'm talking about your Hulk your Sentry your Thor, Miss Marvel. He can beat very high level characters like Captain America, Wolverine, Punisher, Daredevil. The thing is he can beat the living crap out of these characters and pretty easily if he wants to but if he goes a level higher he can't beat a lot of characters, that's why it's hard to find a good fight for him this is why he has a good rouges gallery because this rouge gallery is tailored to his character.
I'd say Peter often gets underestimated because he's such a nice guy and doesn't want to kick anyone's censored. Truth is he's an Avenger level character, I'd argue at Iron-mans level, who is also on this odd scale spider mans at but not quite because he has an entirely different skill set.
Also to the OP he got enhancements during that fight so we could have a fight scene, in the next panel when the upgrade wears off he breaks his hand on Supermans rib cage.
I think given his skill set he's generally written fairly, it's just a known fact that when you get the Spider angry he can do things you never thought he could do.
Max Landis (Despite not liking Pete much) Says that Spider-Man is the perfect powerset. He is powerful enough for you to still be a badass and have fun, but weak enough to be taken out in case he becomes too corrupted.
A guy said that spidey cant compare with iron man? Wtf man!dont you notice that since the marvel cinematic universe spiderman has been nerfed like fuck? I mean , we're talking about the guy that beat like everybody in the secret wars! He beat titania who had beaten she-hulk , x-men all to the ground. Man in one number he even beated the crap out the avengers.
Now since the movies marvel made iron man captain amrrica and the others all super OP and cause they cannot make movies 'bout spiderman he's been left out in the comics... he even kicked firelords ass gods sake.
I wuv him just da way he is! :D
See the thing about Spider-Man is this: he doesn't need to be the strongest or the smartest or the fastest. He's not overpowered and he's not underrated. He remains Marvel's flagship character despite three lackluster films in row and spending 18 months as Doc Ock.
Other than reversing the One More Day deal with the devil nonsense, I wouldn't change a thing. He is perfect the way he is.
There's no such thing as overpowered. Besides, as powerful as Spidey is, he still gets taken down by Punisher, and other street levelers at times.
Spidey is perfect dude. Not to overpowered, not to underpowered. He's right in the middle where he needs to be

This.
That is a silver age superman Spiderman is punching, superman is not overpowered. Spiderman has overpowered tract record. He beat hulk over a dozen times.
There where where other circumstances surrounding that fight. Luthor amped Spidey's power-levels with red sun until he was as powerful as Superman.
I think science has a problem with this. small spiders of only 1 mg can lift 10 times their own body weight. if they are built for lifting at all, trapdoor spiders for instance are great draggers but are NOT able to lift much at all, Larger species can lift much less than 10 times do to the science behind their legs and locomotion, as well as cubing the mass until eventually a spider gets so big it cannot manage to lift a weight equal to its own body weight. so for instance a 64mg spider can only lift around 40mg.
(note largest insect found is 71 mg, it is/was a Weta. the largest spider found was 175mg Goliath bird-eating Spider, it weighed almost 6 times more than its largest prey (birds the size of Sparrows, although it doesn't normally or regularly eat birds, it typically eats prey much smaller than itself like beetles crickets amd sometimes Frogs or Reptiles as these are much easier to catch than birds)\
so this and other large spiders...can lift proportionately much less than human potential, if we take the Spiderman claim literally, he can be a bit of a weakling, otherwise we look at just using the small spider abilities and ignoring science by increasing the mass without decreasing potential, Spiderman can only lift 1-2 tons. still an impressive feat, but far from 15 tons.
I have noticed some good spiderman writers have tried to retcon this, by either having Spiderman explain the bogusness of the claim and just stating that he is really strong and it has nothing to do with spiders as much as its the radioactivity, or by decreasing Spiderman's strength to a more believable level to adhere to at least part of the proportionality claim.
He should logically be able to beat most street levelers. I still chuckle at the fact that Spiderman even with the Iron Spider suit was cautious when fighting Captain America in Civil War. As if Cap's superior skill was going to make up for Spiderman's massive strength, speed, durability advantages in addition to Spider sense.
@jackbensley777 The fact that you think Spider-man is not a top class hero makes me question this whole post. He is one of the most iconic heroes ever.
Spidey has plot powers, powers to fluctuate depending of the situation of the story or depending on the opponents he faces, he loses because he's supposed to be a underdog and unskilled, he wins when he has something to fight for due to heroic reasons and against his limitations, he can beat Thor honestly due to this.
Spider-Man has whooped all of Marvel's greatest street levels and mid tier superhumans. I am waiting till he actually beats Cap and Logan in a fair fight and claims his superiority over them.
I feel he has been underrated recently, especially since the big push of Iron Man, Cap, etc (Marvel owns their film rights) due to the movies. You can tell Marvel wants to slowly move his flagship role away to Iron Man, since they want to sabotage his popularity a bit, and hopefully get back his movie rights.
I also feel that Spider Sense is always horribly underrated - with it, he should be able to dodge any attack thrown at him by anyone slower than a speedster (excluding large AoEs like Hulk thunderclaps). Of course, that would make for pretty boring reading, so I understand why it HAS to be so underpowered.
By all means, he should be the greatest of street levelers, but the writers are only human. They make mistakes;they do not follow the guidelines of the writers before them.
Take for instance, the American Son storyline. During a flashback Peter, a twenty year old male, entered a bar fight instigated by a tortured Harry Osborne. In the aftermath, they were both covered in bruises and Peter received a black eye for his loyalty. But wait, didn't Stan Lee make it clear Peter Parker cannot be hurt by a normal human being?
How about another example? During the segment of a Spider-man comic book, Peter was fighting the Hulk. He smacked the Hulk around like he does his protégés turned evil, dismantling him in a couple of blows and finally buried him in cement.
Impressive but not realistic in the slightest.
Despite these two examples, however. I have found many battles in which I approve of. Spider-man just barely managing to survive a mind controlled fantastic four. The Superior Spider-man avoiding the attacks of the avengers until he was distracted.
Then, we are treated with terrible fights in which Peter punches out Galactus and is unable to keep up with the average parkour specialist.
Depending on the writer, he can be either overpowered or underrated. Ever since the reboot I have enjoyed myself immensely, though.
On comicvine however, he is largely underrated by the majority of the users who are not his fans.
Spiderman is not overpowered. Spiderman is nothing compared to Superman if that's what you're suggesting. Superman lifts 6.6 quintillion tons, can move 8x the speed of light and can survive supernova's. Spiderman lifts about 10-50 tons, has a limited degree of superhuman speed and can't even survive bullets.
..he appears to have been de-powered recently. In some of the older comics he mixed it with some really powerful characters....
With his degree of super-strength, speed, agility and spider sense he should be able to easily overcome fellow street-level heroes such as Cap and Wolverine. He's beaten the Rhino who has given Hulk good scraps in the past...
@jimishim12: what do you mean "fair fight" spidey has beaten logan so any times
@jimishim12: what do you mean "fair fight" spidey has beaten logan so any times
Cuz Logan was holding back, Logan the guy who fucks with Hulk and sometimes Juggs. Plus Logan has at times took Peter to the limits and almost killed him and had him dead to rights at the last second he pull back his claws.
Peter Parker on the other hand is written as the whupping boy of the fights he's in because he's not a natural fighter or instinctually aggressive and adept at retaliation. He has to be motivated have a fire lit up his ass to fight back, and when he does he just relies on his auto pilot spider super performance instincts to beat up things and wins by using preemptive cunning to subdue his attacker instead of straight up fighting or combating his opponent on equal grounds, because Peter has no natural fighting training. It's like Deadpool said, he didn't get bit by a spider to do spidey like aerial nimble like attacks and skills.
It's why Jessica Drew beat him up despite being on the streets as long as he has. It's why Logan can and has almost kill him even despite having superior movement speed and agility plus super strength, and it's probably why any street leveler bar clint can hang toe to toe with him because Peter is a still an amateur fighter with a bad case of spider power dependency, I hope the reboot has him retain his spider martial arts.
