Why does Marvel hate Shuma-Gorath? It was embarrassing how he got handled in Mighty Avengers #3. He shows up, possesses a few people with his gaze and toys with Luke Cage a bit, then out of nowhere gets his eye penetrated through both ends by Blue Marvel and downed! What!? Then even though Shuma reforms they just power up White Tiger's amulet and then out comes this ghost of the White Tiger or some crap like that and it then tells Shuma that the Earth is his and to leave it alone before it just starts eating Shuma-Gorath's body.

Sooo many problems with this. But now it's like Marvel is saying guys like Thor, Sentry, Hulk, or any other decently powered character can beat up Shuma. Wasn't he this huge threat back in the 70s and 80s? Why was he diminished so much? What the heck he's even drawn like how he appears in the most recent Marvel vs Capcom game.

Shame on you Marvel for depowering old characters just to make your current heroes look legitimate.

If anything, Mighty Avengers #3 just made Shuma-Gorath's loss in this issue and previous issues where he was summoned much more excusable and repaired his image. Spider Hero tells Blue Marvel that the Shuma-Gorath that was summoned was just the tiniest fraction of Shuma-Gorath's true power. Here's the exact quote after Blue Marvel asks what Shuma-Gorath is. "Shuma-Gorath. Or the smallest part of it - - like a fingernail scratching at our reality. Trying to tear through." He then says "Nice work on the physical manifestation - - you bought us maybe two extra minutes. If we can disrupt the astral self as well, we can block it off before it gets too big of a foothold here."

This is Marvel-backed proof that every time Shuma-Gorath has been summoned after Strange fought him in his realm, it's only been a very small fraction of the real Shuma-Gorath's essence that made it to Earth. His banishment by Strange at Stonehenge and getting beaten back by the Spear of Destiny are much more understandable now. The fact that Shuma was able to possess people and do what he did with essentially the equivalent of a fingernail just reinforces that Shuma-Gorath in its full manifestation is one really powerful being you don't want to mess with.

above post is true^ however it still seems like kind of a cop out because with Doctor strange tearing down the mystical barriers more of shuma should have been able to enter than ever before and should have been more powerful. the white tiger amulet has always been a joke and shuma having weaknesses that a real giant eyeball would have is pathetic, (going down to photon)

Yeah that "White Tiger Force" was kind of silly, and Blue Marvel shouldn't have been able to burst through Shuma's eyeball anyway. Marvel has this habit of using old established characters to make their current heroes look more legitimate. It's a good thing the author put in Spider Hero's explanation, because if it were the full manifestation of Shuma-Gorath getting owned like that it would have been extremely humiliating.

@setherial:

if it was real Universe devouring can't be killed by death Shuma I would have been at a loss for words at how little the writer new about him. But agree completely on Marvel abusing their old power houses to try and show off their new as the best thing.

@living_monstrosity: I thought that was only a fraction of Shuma that could come through at the time. I thought it wasn't his entire power but just a small fraction that breached.
