What kind of characters does the Vine need?

#1 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

Over the years a lot of viners have filled roles and had character very similar to that of comic book counterparts; some of which many of us associate with that character all the time! I've been present on the Vine for about three years now on various accounts periodically and I have to say that the character type that sticks the most and has the most of has to be the street-leveler, martial artist, gun slinging type. Is this a bad thing? I don't believe so as it pushes users to make their characters creative instead of having a creative and rarely used powerset.

But I'll ask this question; what type of character would you like to see more of? Are there any powers that you would like to see used more? Would you like the Vine to have it's own version of a certain, already existing comic character?

Villains. Dont care what the power set or archetype is. Just more villains.

#3 Posted by Ultrus (41 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@.Ajax.: Powerhouses.

#4 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Quintus_Knightfall

I remember at one point when there were barely any heroes but lately it seems there are very few villains; especially devoted ones at that.

#5 Posted by Sideslash (5560 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

The ones it doesn't deserve right now.

#6 Posted by Quintus_Knightfall (5232 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@.Ajax.: It always swings to extremes it seems. Alot of black bars but that alone doesnt mean much. However they all seem to be more hero/dark hero oriented.

#7 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Ultrus

Like this guys right here ;)? *points at self with two thumbs*

Personally I love powerhouses but I find when people usually make them, their incredibly over-powered similar to characters like Thanos, Darkseid and the like.

#8 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Quintus_Knightfall

I couldn't agree more. I can't say I ever remember the Vine being overly equal in terms of heroes and villains. But than again, most of the viners I remember most that aren't here anymore were villains, like DaggerKlutz.

#9 Posted by Quintus_Knightfall (5232 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

Yeah I'd also like to see more Powerhouses. More diversity in general would/will, only be a good thing. I dont think there is such a thing as an "over-powered" character. In the hands of a skilled rpger powers mean nothing.

#10 Posted by Ultrus (41 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@.Ajax.: Yeah, like Eternal Chaos, DC, those folk. I'm talking more flying brick type characters.

#11 Posted by Morte_Knightfall (1289 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

At first I wanted to see an anarchic villain because nobody to my knowledge here has taken a swing at that in a long time. But Final Arrow is now writing an anarchic villain so at least I got to see that. Other than that, I want to see more villains and powerhouses. I want someone to come up with some evil Darkseid type-sh*t.

#12 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Quintus_Knightfall

I couldn't agree more ! Even recently I though about bringing Ajax down to a lower power and making him similar to Bane, but that idea has certainly been scrapped.

@Ultrus

Yes, exactly! I've heard people say that having a ton of flying bricks wouldn't be good, and we'd be like DC comics and all that stuff...generally negativity every time I've seen it. However, how would it be any different than all of the street-levelers? It will once again push the creativity of viners to be different from one another despite their similar powers.

Exactly. An event could be created around that. And whoever played Darkseid shouldnt feel obligated to sell every street leveler. If you have a character who is a bonafide powerhouse like that players should respect the obvious disparity between street level and superman level.

Glad you didnt. This way you can have him take on 7 to 10 street levelers or a single powerhouse.

#14 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Quintus_Knightfall

I could always pull-off a Darkseid type. I have afterall been thinking of turning him into a permanent monster so he isn't so much like Hulk and giving him some form of intelligence just to give him more depth.

#15 Posted by Morte_Knightfall (1289 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Quintus_Knightfall: No doubt. I would love to see somebody write that type of villain and make them very relevant to CVnU canon. I was seconds from doing that myself when I wanted to create a villain team a few days ago. I really wanna see that big bad mofo that characters know not to mess with. I'm with ya on that selling thing.Whoever writes that type of powerhouse shouldn't feel obligated to do that, I mean, how can you sell a punch from a super-soldier if you're Superman-like LOL. Seriously though, I hope somebody takes a look at this thread and gets some inspiration to create that type of character.

#16 Posted by Quintus_Knightfall (5232 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@.Ajax.: Do it lol you could even go the WWH route. I've been toying with that idea for awhile

@Morte_Knightfall: Lets do it. Make an Orion and Darkseid character and go from there.

#17 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Morte_Knightfall

If I get enough encouragement and a few opinions from at least one of you, than I'll pull it off.

#18 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Quintus_Knightfall

Hmm possibly. I'll see what I can come up with!

#19 Posted by Morte_Knightfall (1289 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@.Ajax.: I think you should do it man. For real.

@Quintus_Knightfall: I'm completely down for that.

I don't need that encouragement. I have too many alts already.

@Morte_Knightfall

I'll pm you, I need opinions haha. If I pull it off, I'd love to have another evil Darkseid-type to fight against for the control of Earth...could prove interesting.

#22 Posted by Morte_Knightfall (1289 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@.Ajax.: Nice. Add my main to the PM.

@Sideslash: LOL then get on it son!

#23 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Morte_Knightfall

I don't even know who your main is haha! Excuse my ignorance!

#24 Posted by Sideslash (5560 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Morte_Knightfall: No! I can't! Too many...alts...alr-

*Begins writing origin.*

Damn you. >_<

More supernatural types wouldnt hurt.

#26 Posted by Morte_Knightfall (1289 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@.Ajax.: LOL forgive me for assuming :P its Impero.

@Sideslash: Hehehe ;)

#27 Posted by .Ajax. (1951 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@The_Puzzler

I have to agree with you. I'd love to see a Hellboy type!

@Morte_Knightfall

Haha, don't worry about it man!

#28 Posted by Sideslash (5560 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Morte_Knightfall: You will rue this day!

Well go on, start rueing.

#29 Posted by Morte_Knightfall (1289 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

#30 Posted by Sideslash (5560 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

@Morte_Knightfall: Well...I guess you can wait until I actually make the character. But then you shall rue!

#31 Posted by _Legion_ (518 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

Villains that aren't ninja assassin neutrals. We need Doctor Dooms and Cobra Commanders somewhere.

I would actually have Ronin be a villain, he is like a warrior simply does what his king ask, the question is who is the evil king?

Powerhouses are rare because it requires a community effort to pull it off. If no one's willing to be weaker than someone else, that eliminates the concept.

The needs of the vine fluctuate from time to time. But the CORE of what the vine needs never changes.

The vine needs conflict. If you don't have a conflict, you don't have a story anyone is going to care about. If the majority of active characters are heroes, that's less potential for conflict. If the majority is villains, same problem.

That's why I have high hopes for the registration act. If played right it could be an opportunity for LONG TERM conflict between HEROES. The same with villains. Basically you can have heroes in conflict with other heroes, and with villains. And you can have villains in conflict with other villains, and with heroes.

Less Villains and Dark Neutrals, More True Blue Type Heroes. Then Again, The NU Seems to be fixing that...

And Yes, I Know I don't write heroic characters well.

#39 Posted by Milkeila (58 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

I think people should make whatever their hearts desire, and not worry about what other people expect or want.

@shadowknight666: I made Heart Spark. She is my true blue character, but she bores me to tears, so it is hard for me to write her properly.

#40 Posted by Trauma (5603 posts) - 4 months, 10 days ago - Show Bio

We need classic characters. Ones willing to stick to a look and a power set. Everything changes wayyyy tooo often here

I remember in my earliest days, I let Major USA beat on me, as well as Tanner Brenkov, back when he was a space bounty hunter. And The Puzzler, when he was a Sith. And Lady Death, when...I think that time I just felt like getting hurt.

What am I, a punching bag? Ah, well.....

This also falls to what kind of writers we have, IMO. Because people are a lot more willing to sell a powerful character being written by an experienced and trusted writer as opposed to otherwise.

Yep. And they have a point. A badly managed powerhouse can be nothing but trouble for everyone, so people are rightfully wary to engage.
