Using different languages in RPing

I'm sure it's been done before, but I was curious what everybody thought about using languages other than English in rp's. Regardless of it being done, in a scattered rp it doesn't seem to be utilized much or at least to me any ways.

I don't mean to have the entire rp written in another language, but just some dialogue maybe here and there. It would certainly promote character development, and for those learning new languages (learning Spanish myself), it would certainly promote a great way to learn.

Of course this would be up to the individual discretion of the persons involved in the rp, and translations could be given (in brackets for example).

It's just an idea I had....so what is every bodies opinion?

Depends on the individual, mostly. Some people fluent in another language may do entire passages as such, others may insert small tidbits here and there. Most people not fluent in a language but nevertheless writing such a character tend to insert things (words, phrases, sentences that they can understand) here and there. Or, some people take a page from comics and <do these little markers to indicate another language being spoken, and indicate which language as an aside at the beginning or end of the post.>

I used Spanish in a post recently, and hoping to use Italian at some point too..I personally like it..adds a little bit of authenticity. I know Autocrat used German a few times in Beyond and it was really well done.

I already rp in a language different from my native one ;p

@arquitenens: I know a handful of german...almost conversational level. Decided to learn some Spanish however....kinda want to learn Norwegian or Dutch though!

Portuguese, English and a rusty Spanish.

Still wanna learn German, though.

@vamoose: I found starting off with german was fairly simple, since a lot of it is visually similar to english (sentence structure and such) but when you really get into it, germans like to group big words together and it gets harder imo. Check out Duolingo, fantastic free site.

I'm currently learning Portuguese. Should be able to make a Brazil-based RPG at some point this coming year lol...

@last_guardian: I plan on making a Spanish style rp. Valken will be South American (Colombian specifically) and the aim is to bring together all Hispanic nations under one banner. Portuguese would be included I would think ;)

@valken: I really love how us Germans create new ultra-long words from scratch. The ability to built super-complex sentences is also quite nifty. Not many languages can compete with a word like "Donaudampschifffahrtskapitänskajütenklinkenschraube" and still have it make sense. lol

@graviteen: I love what I know of the german language, and I'm huge fan of german culture. Being a member of the military, I find their military fascinating.

As a person who knows some Japanese and English , I have to say that you better make sure you have your grammar right.

@maverick_6: I should know more French than I do haha. Being Canadian and having being taught it since early grade school, I definitely know a lot less than I should. I was considering pursuing it as a second language, but it's the most common around here for people to know despite it never being used where I live. I like being to unique for that haha!

@shadowswordmaster: Wanted to learn Japanese once but I couldn't bring up the time. Learned a few tiny bits and found them to be fascinating. Especially their way of asking questions with the "ka" suffix is simply brilliant.

@valken: lol Military is a... difficult thing for Germans at best. Because of our history our relationship with it is quite ambivalent.

That being said, I use a translator for various demonic phrases.

The language is Xelu'tari and it's literally a letter swap of English.

Impossible to pronounce.

@valken: Yeah. I am an american (mostly. Parents jamaican but only know English). I just learned it in school somewhat because I wanted to learn it. But French is something I want to pursue because I might travel there.

getting paid more to know such a rare language in the navy is also a bonus ;)

@graviteen: Japanese is a cool language to learn and it's pretty easy to learn if you go for it.

@maverick_6 Fair enough! In terms of Europe, French and German are probably the two most useful languages to know besides english of course. However, from my travels, French has typically been more useful as most Germans will switch to english (they tend to have good english, some better than North American's).

@last_guardian: Hahaha, legal, cara! Tente usar o 'hifen' para separar a palavra do aposto ( in that case, the 'lo' bit). Correct would be 'visita-lo', but that's not f*cked up. I mean, it's a hard language and you aren't a native.

@vamoose: I'm fluent in Spanish so the basics are pretty easy to grasp for me. I still have some trouble with syntax and exactly how to say certain words (where to make the emphasis, etc.)

@arquitenens: Check out Duolingo - it's a fantastic learning tool. Also, if you have a smartphone, you can download free apps to help you learn; most have simple and useful phrases that will help you along!

@last_guardian: After I get the hang of Spanish, I may branch out to either Italian or Romanian. There are more resources for Italian so that will likely be my choice. French is also a possibility. One step at a time though!
