For each universe, a sorcerer supreme is selected by inscrutable powers to act as that universe's foremost guardian against threats of supernatural and cosmic origins as well as to help guide the mystic world towards a better end. With this title comes a great many very powerful artefacts, the backing of antedeluvian entities of incomprehensible might, the respect of mages the multiverse over, immortality, immunity to disease, an unbreachable sanctuary with all one could want or need, incredible wealth, access to mystic resources that most mages could only dream of, and enormous responsibility, for the title bearer now becomes the designated champion of the cosmos against all sorts of threats that would seek to destabilize it, such as the Dread Dormammu, the fearsome Mordru, the ancient Vrakmul, and the menace of the gods of Chaos. For many long years, this title has been held by Sir Jeffery Clauswitz, better known as the Archmage Gygax. Having won the title after it was relinquished by Doctor Strange, Gygax had acted as an immensely powerful and very learned Wizard. He proved to be more than an adequete replacement for his predecessor.
But what could not have been foreseen is that Gygax accumulated so much might so quickly that he actually went and ascended to a higher plane of existence, leaving behind the universe in search of higher learning. This was quite a problem, as this meant that there was no Sorcerer Supreme or designated replacement at the moment. So the only logical thing that could be done was put forward. A contest would be held to find a replacement. The word was sent out all across the universe, to beings from each and every one of the planes that float around the material like planets around a star. Everyone with even a modicum of magical ability in any school was being invited, being informed that the powers that be were searching for a new mystical champion. A new sorcerer supreme would be chosen, and the trials were set anew.
Great cosmic and supernatural powers of all sorts have come to observe, for the selection of a new Sorcerer Supreme is an absolutely momentous event. It is an event that will be known all throughout the universe, with a prize of immense proportions waiting for one with enough raw power, skill, and wit to claim it. Heroes, neutrals, and villains are being selected, Demons, Mordons, Slaadi, Angels, and Rilarii have been given the call, Gods and mortals alike have been invited, Elementals and Energons are attending, Children and Adults approach to prove their worth, Humans and Aliens are gathering, going through the portals that open once one reads their letter and accepts their challenge. Indeed, even the losers do not go home empty handed. The runner up gets to ask any favor of the victor and may select three major artefacts of their choosing that are not slated for the sorcerer supreme, the one in third may take an major artefact of their choosing, and the rest receive either a minor artifact or three wondrous magical items.
Thus, as there is nothing to lose, for the enchantments done by the powers that be mean that none may die or suffer permanent harm through these trials, mages of all colours are flocking to the Halls of Mysticism so that they may have a chance at proving themselves the greatest user of magic in the cosmos and be richly rewarded for their efforts. The stakes are high, with many enemies attending the contest bitterness flows like water, but none can deny that what is awaiting those who triumph is more than worth it. But let it not be said that the challenges ahead would not be difficult. For they are a perilous lot. Deadly dungeons, perilous planes of existence, lovecraftian monsters, dreadful wicked sorcerers, outright gods, baffling mazes, fiendish riddles and puzzles, and more all await those who would seek to prove themselves the greatest Mage of them all.
Who will prove themselves superior to all the rest and claim the title of sorcerer supreme? Who will show that they are without peer or equal in all the cosmos?
Rules
This is an open role play, anyone can join as either a player or a judge. Judges are needed to provide impartial game masters for the challenges and to decide who won them. So in a way this is a little like king of the vine.
Standard role playing rules apply.
Try to go into some detail about where your magic comes from and what kinds of magic you specialize in.
Challenges will be made in the PMs.
Unlike similar events, this is mostly a player vs environment role play rather than player vs player, with the players trying to come out on top in spite of perilous threats set about them.
This is fully canon.
Winner gets a large number of artifacts, a power boost, a sanctum sanctorum, the title Sorcerer Supreme, a brand spanking new rogue's gallery, multiversal wide fame and respect, and all the bragging rights, all of them.
Runner up gets three powerful artefacts of their choice and a favor from the winner.
Third place gets one major artefact.
Everyone else gets a minor artefact or three wondrous items (crystal balls, wands, staffs, flying carpets, cloaks of charisma, that sort of thing) just for trying.
Power boosting items are fine to bring in.

What does a GM do? A GM will control the NPCs and environmental hazards such as traps, puzzles, and mazes. GM posts come on a first come first serve basis. When a GM feels like a post should be made, they are to announce "I will make a GM post" on the OOC thread before diving into the IC and doing what they feel needs to be done. That way things keep on moving quickly.
