Near Seattle, Washington
A government scientist strode down a sterile white hall towards a large concrete and iron door . He wore a white trench coat, jeans, and a buttoned-up shirt. He had glasses on his face, and held a notebook under his left arm. As he made his way through the hall he passed several other doors, all heavily fortified and with multiple locks to accommodate the dangerous projects within. As the scientist reached his intended door, he adjusted his glasses and took a deep breath. The door had a finger-print scanner which he quickly dealt with. Next was a retinal scanner, which forced him to crane his neck a little. The last was a verbal command, which he had practiced mentally several times before reaching the room.
"Doctor Adleus Mark. Open cell #13, release Test Subject #1702; Codename: Annihilation."
"Yes, Doctor Mark," an automated voice responded in a woman's tone.
Several locks immediately opened, while others disengaged. Before he knew it, Adleus was watching the door slide slowly open, revealing a white room. At the center was a man sitting on the floor with his hands wrapped around his legs. He wore an all white T-shirt and pants, with no shoes. There was a distinctive black collar on his neck as well. Mark passed over the threshold and the door closed quietly behind him.
"Hello, #1702. I'm Doctor Mark. I'm here to assess your abilities."
The man on the floor didn't turn to look at Adleus, or even attempt to move in discomfort. He kept his eyes trained on the floor, his gaze melting away into nothingness. It was as if Adleus didn't exist.
Adleus continued, even without the cooperation of the patient. "Well, I'm going to lead you to a practice room so we can get that collar off of you."
The doctor offered his hand to the man, which prompted a response.
"I'd rather not," he said in a low tone.
Adleus retracted his hand. "You'll come or I'll call the guards," he said coldly.
"Call them," Annihilation responded, looking up into Adleus's eyes. He reached for his collar, which fell off by the slight tug. The patient stood up, stretching his legs, much to Adleus's horror. He reached in his mouth and pulled out a pin.
"I'm not stupid," he said, throwing the pin aside. "Just because I turn into a hulking monster doesn't mean I don't have certain talents Doctor Mark. And instead of calling me #1702, I'd appreciate Clarence."
Clarence pushed Adleus, shoving him into the door. "Now you're going to open it, and I'm going to walk out of here a free man. You got that?"
Adleus shook his head, perspiration starting to form on his brow. "I'm sorry, but escaping a government facility won't allow you to be a free man. This is America. What do you think Americans do here? Walk out of jail?"
Clarence smirked. "You don't want to go after me, Doctor. Open the door."
Adleus nodded, turning and initiating the unlock sequence. The door slid open.
Clarence exited, and pushed Adleus back into the room. "Have fun in the box. Write something in that diary of yours," he said, pointing towards the notebook under the Doctor's arm. Before he could respond, Adleus was locked in the room...
And Annihilation was free.
