Rama Khan has brought the Legacy virus into play. It is a virus that is specifically tailored to affect mutants. The powers of the infected kick into overdose, killing them by growing into exponential rates.
Several doses have been given away, to be sold on the black market and therefore cast a wider net into the mutant population. Renegade and La Espada have teamed up in an attempt to prevent this from happening, and perhaps even trace it back to its original source.
