Whether it's in battles, NPCs or just mental/emotional trauma, how much do you put your character through? Have you pushed them to their breaking limits? Have you given them hell (literally or not), or do you give them an easy time of it?

As far as the situation pushes them.

I give KD a hard life most the time and other viner's characters tend to give him hell as well.
I agree
@Honor_Finesse: To me there's no such place as a limit, theres no barrier or wall with a sign that say stop doing this to your character it's too mean!!. It is my goal for me to try to make my character go through as much hell as I can so at the end the taste of victory is even sweeter

I love this outlook. I'm very much of the same thought process. My character has been through a ridiculous amount, including a rape at the hands of Darkchild.
My character lacks the fortitude of most. Then again being forced to kill children on your first outing as a "hero" isn't exactly healthy for a character.
I've pushed him to the point of losing what humanity he gained coming to Earth for the first time by learning from Cassidy.
When you've been through as much as the broken soul that is the Mercenary, there is not much that can push you. I try to write him as a Zaraki Kenpachi type guy. Mysterious, Ancient, Bloodlust, Immense power. The finer things in life.
Out of all of my characters, I've given Nova the most difficult time :'( I'M SORRY NOVA! T_T
and out of the rest of my characters, the one who has it the easiest is probably Homicide xD
I WANT to make things difficult for Kain. I've forced him to kill his father, watch the rape and murder of his mother at the hands of nine other men, have his first true love die in his arms and kill his best friend/lover. I've had the souls of his victims come after him and ghosts of the past haunt his dreams. He's been imprisoned more than once and has had several terrible experiences. I like figuring out ways to have him overcome obstacles. But at the same time, I like having him do the unthinkable because it shows how willing to do what needs to be done he is and it also shows how heartless he can be in the moment but that later on I like to write out how he feels about the situation and his coping mechanisms.
I like to go easy on my character
Well on a mental level not yet but I'm aiming to in the future. Physically, I'm going to be doing that from time to time.
Burned alive twice. Broken into atoms once. One emotionally straining relationship. 2 mental breakdowns. Powers removed twice. Fractured knee cap once. Shoulder dislocated once. Jaw broken once.
John is incredibly busy. He knows that there is truth behind the common superhero joke that "The world just can't stay saved for five minutes." He's probably going to crack at some point. That and he's going through a lot of hammering to his idealistic world view.
Especially if he finds out that the leaders of the Order are the embodiment of what he's been fighting for his whole life. That would wreck him.
Joey still hasn't met his limits... a battle would probaly push him power wise.
Always damage him in some way or form in Rp's repair and upgrade later because of mechanical parts
I put my characters through hell. In every way imaginable. Naamah has been beaten and rapped so many times from her ex husband, the acts themselves no longer have any effect on her mind what so ever. She has been forced to commit horrible acts, as she lost control of her willpower from the demon Obyzouth who shared her body with her since Babylonian times. She has just now become free of that bondage as well. Brynhyld was forged in the fires of Asgard to be the perfect warrior. My new characters... I have yet to decide how they will be broken, but they will. They always are.
@Sun_Pao: What does not kill them will make them stronger
Quickster hasn't been pushed just yet. But when he does, he might get it. I want something to push him, not just emotionally, but to where he gets to show off his smarts, because that's an aspect he really needs push in.

No, See what doesn't kill them, Only kills them very slowly.
Cain is usually the one doing to pushing.

That only works on meatbags
Usually, I look back at the most trying and harrowing experience he had ever endured in the past and think to myself 'okay, let's see if he can do that again, but in a lot more pain'.
I have yet to really punish Horatio, but I will. I plan on making him enure much.
Not far enough... Till now
I gotta get on it. I may go easier on Annie though, because even I have to admit I think she's adorable and I might break my own heart.
