History

5,000 years ago, the Earth was visited by an alien race known as the Niburans, led by their ruler, King Erus, who were in search of a planet where they would establish their empire after the destruction of their home world. In the past, they were a galactic race who conquered many planets throughout the galaxy and were believed to be more powerful than any other species in the existence. They were known to naturally possess the power to manipulate different elements of nature and also known for living immensely long lifespans. Some were said to have lived up to 6,000 years.

The Niburans arrived on Earth and settled in the ancient region of Mesopotamia approx. 3100 BC. During this time, the Sumerian city of Uruk was one of the first post-diluvian kingdoms and the most important city of Mesopotamia. The human race proved to be a great workforce to them as they observed them and all their ways. When the Niburans made themselves known to the humans, they were revered as gods and deities. It was then when they became known as the Anunnaki.

Each of them was held as a patron deity of a particular city or city state. Upon their arrival, Erus, who was given the name Anu by the Mesopotamians and revered as the sky god, was held as the patron god of the kingdom of Uruk. The ruler of the Anunnaki, along with his two subjects, Enlil who was revered as the god of winds and Enki who was worshiped as the god of seas, ruled over the lands as a triad, with Anu possessing higher authority. To the people of Mesopotamia, he was the source of and active principle in all authority, both in human society and within the Anunnaki. Anu was the force which insured the necessary voluntary obedience to orders, laws, and customs in society and to world order. In this manner, the Niburans kept the people of Mesopotamia under their dominion in order to fully establish their mother empire in the foreign planet and reigned for over a thousand years. After taking absolute control over Mesopotamia, Anu sent battalions to colonize and conquer other planets around the galaxy in the attempt to reawaken their interstellar empire.

During their time on Earth, the Niburans witnessed the rise of many different kingdoms and civilizations throughout Mesopotamia, the Sumerian kingdoms, the Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian Empires. Although it was believed that the cosmic ruling body of the state in ancient Mesopotamia was the Anunnaki, a human steward was selected to enact that cosmic order. Many kings were personally chosen by the Anunnaki and, although they acted to manifest the will of their gods, they themselves were not considered to be godly. In this way, their primary role were as men who were divinely chosen. The Anunnaki were partly responsible of the rise of a certain number of kingdoms, but they also caused their downfalls. There were times in which they were displeased with humanity, regarding their worship as insufficient, and chastised them with plague, famine, and invasions of other armies. The Anunnaki kept tight control over the people of Mesopotamia, and regarded them as a slave race. However, not all humans were kept under servitude. Some of them managed to become part of the Anunnaki. Ninsun, mother of the Sumerian king Gilgamesh, became part of the pantheon due to her devotion and was deified by the Sumerians. Nergal, traditionally revered as the god of the underworld, was a powerful sorcerer and necromancer who along with his sect, was recruited by the Niburans.

Nearly by the end of the 3rd millenium BC, the Anunnaki faced uprisings from the humans and over time, they lost power over humanity, as they eventually came under increased pressure from rebellious forces within their Empire as well as rebellions from without. In the year 2130 BC, Lord Manishtusu, an Akkadian warrior, led a full-scale rebellion against the Anunnaki, seeking to avenge the destruction of the Akkadian Empire, destroyed by invading hordes of mountainous barbarians 20 years earlier, sent by Anu, who was displeased with the Akkadian people, after they had formed their empire conquering all the cities in Mesopotamia where the Anunnaki were held as patron deities, including Uruk, Anu's realm. The Niburan king was eventually killed in battle by the humans and after his death, his pantheon became divided. Their internal conflicts caused them the loss of power over many cities throughout Mesopotamia and their war with the humans waged on. The rebellion Manishtusu commenced gave way to a severe war between humanity and the Anunnaki for the next four hundred years.

Marduk, lord of Babylon

From the year 1940 BC onward, nomadic clans known as the Martu entered Mesopotamian territory, led by their warlord, Amurru, one of Anu's sons, who sought to reestablish the kingdom his father formed on Earth, which was now fallen apart. Amurru attempted to obliterate all the tribes of Mesopotamia and organize a new kingdom, with the people he commanded. The Martu spread throughout the lands and eventually all of Mesopotamia was ruled by the Martu, guided by Amurru. However, Marduk, Enki's son and one of Anu's strongest warriors, contended with Amurru for power. After many encounters, Marduk killed Amurru and ruled over the Martu people in the south, while in the north, they rebelled against him. When Babylon became the political center of the Euphrates valley in the time of Hammurabi (18th century BC), the Martu king of Babylon, Marduk rose to the position of the head of what was left of the Anunnaki, a position he fully acquired by the second half of the second millennium BC. In the city of Babylon, he resided in his temple, the Esagila. He occupied Niburan creatures known as the Mušḫuššu in combat, and the Mušḫuššu was regarded in Babylon as the sacred animal of Marduk. Under his guidance, Babylon conquered many cities throughout Mesopotamia, and Marduk's kingdom remained strong during the reign of Hammurabi. However, soon after his death, the kingdom began to fall apart. Aside from the Attacks of all the armies of Northern Mesopotamia, a fearsome horde emerged from the sealands of Babylon, who proved to be a formidable force that continually challenged Marduk's Babylonian kingdom. Despite his efforts to destroy them, Marduk was defeated by the Sealand warriors, who eventually brought about the downfall of Babylon.

Like Marduk, the Niburans continued to attempt to reestablish the empire Anu once formed in Mesopotamia but their constant battles with the Mesopotamian people prevented them from rising to power as their predecessor and the humans were able to overpower the Niburans, which also marked the loss of their sovereignty over humanity. Thanks to these battles, the yoke that was imposed on humanity by the Anunnaki for many centuries was now broken.

Their presence on Earth faded as the centuries went by and only their names and myths remained. By the 17th century BC, the Niburans completely disappeared. It was never certain what happened to the Niburans after their war with the Mesopotamians. Some say they retreated from Earth due to their lack of power, while others believe they died out. The only thing that is known is that they were vanquished by the uprising from the humans. The stories about their conspiracy and how their dominion came to an end were told throughout the ages.

(A special Thanks to @izaiah, @vrakmul, and @shadowswordmaster who contributed with the mythos and to the CoE for approving it.)
