The Biotists

No Caption Provided

An advanced race, the Biotists live 14 million light years from Earth in what humans call M51 -the Whirlpool, a spiral galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. They have colonised the majority of solar systems in their native galaxy, living both on the habitable planets and on biological habitats that exist in orbits around gas giants. After germination, a habitat usually grows for around 10 years. During this period it is supervised from a small space-station in a near orbit. After the growth period it is opened for settlement. The habitat is completely genetically engineered. It is mostly made out of Bitek Polyp (a living coral). A habitat is completely self-supporting. Artificial gravity is created by rotating the whole habitat around its axis. The light inside the habitat is produced by a hollow tube which spans the entire length of the habitat and is powered by high electric currents. The habitat's basic functions are digestion of interstellar material into everything needed to support its structure and its inhabitants (during maturation the habitat usually consumes large amounts of interstellar matter) and digestion of all waste products produced by the inhabitants and the habitat itself. It only requires an external power supply; this is achieved via conductor cables, which grow on the outer hull of the habitat. Due to the rotation, these cables cross the electromagnetic flux of the nearby gas giant and thus produce electrical energy. Communication with the habitat can be achieved via affinity or via datavise using special interfaces. Each habitat also has its own habitat personality.

The affinity bond, similar to telepathy, links all Biotists together mentally. It is normally a genetically-engineered trait. Affinity uses two modes of engagement: Singular engagement is that between two Biotists, an Biotist and a bitek construct or two bitek constructs. Collective engagement is that between three or more affinity-enabled beings. (Personal and public affinity-use is also distinguished by these terms.) A special collective engagement called consensus enables a large group of affinity-enabled beings to form a singular representative mental entity. Not only does affinity allow for communication, it also defines a key aspect of Biotist culture. Emotions and raw thoughts can be filtered and sent via affinity. This connects Biotists on a far greater sociological plateau than most other species, as they can provide support and encouragement to other Biotists in need. This apparently contributes to the common Biotist belief of self-superiority to all non- Biotists .

When Biotists physically die, their minds are often transferred to memory cells on their home habitats where they can continue to exist as non-corporeal observers capable of affinity until their conciousness is absorbed entirely into the habitat personality, or their memory can be downloaded back into a new body, making actual death an almost non-existent idea. There are many servitors that habitats also construct for both slave labour and policing, empty minded bodies controlled by the habitat that function solely to improve the standard of living and keep order. Housing shortages and hunger are also unheard of as population is regulated by the habitat which forms houses out of its own being, with cells capable of evolving into desired furniture over time and special secretarial cells that produce a thick paste capable of taking on several flavours as per the inhabitants wishes.

Militarily, Biotist captains are often born jointly inside the embryo of their ships, giving them a strong affinity link to their living vessels capable of worm-hole travel. Their ships are also living beings, each with their own personality which grow up alongside their captains until ready to go on duty.
