Characters Talking in RP's

This is a question I've always wondered. When you're writing with someone or a group of people and your character is talking how do you write the conversation. PM the writer for what their character would say? Ask to write their character? Wait for them to respond in their next post?

I think the lack of conversation takes away from the character and story, but how can you fit it in smoothly?

There's no one way of writing it, but sometimes you have to move the story ahead after the convo. So what are your methods, experiences, advice and questions?

The experience that I've always had with this is ( at least for me ), I'd prefer a mutual agreement to allow dialogue to be written for both characters. I know that if you write something Tatu or Vesigrae wouldn't say, I'd just ask you to change it. If you did not, I'd stop RPing with you all together.

That being said, it does give some people the ability to "bunny" or the opportunity to ruin or reveal a plotline. But I think between two mature, adult RPers, it should be no problem to agree on something.

I always ask the person if its ok if I write out a conversion between the characters. So I'll write out a post, and show the conversion to them, if their ok with it, then I'll post it.
 
Or if I don't know that person's character well enough, I will ask the rpger how their character would respond if my character would tell/ask their characters something. Then go off of that.

I get confused when you're writing with a team or group of people and you ask things or have convo among each other. I avoid them, but has anybody done or seen it before?

I always ask but if its someone I know well or am close with IRL they are usually cool with me just NPCing them, I don't often write big speeches on their part, just small reactions etc.

@Clara Mass: I hit a wall when I'm writing other characters. I remember Slight wrote Mercury once and he nailed it.

I try to not write many conversations....because of this. I don't want to put words in the mouth of another character...unless it's a teammate. But there are some characters who I feel I can write as well as the writer (Risky, Whisper, Hunter) and they haven't ever minded me writing something for their character....cause I know them so well.

I never ask I really just do it and if they got a problem, then I delete it.

Well I'm new here but certain ideas of RP apply wherever you go. I try to avoid those kind of situations entirely. I describe scenes but don't go into conversations unless the other person is activly participating in the thread and will reply quickly to my post. comicvine... I find your refusal to provide me with a formatable text box disturbing.... *force choke*

This is in reference to full on RPGs, I believe. Not the actual thread interactions.

I always PM to check if it's cool. Sometimes.

It's usually discussed. In my experience, the most fun conversations in the middle of full on RPs are spur of the moment. What's the point of role playing if you have to limit what you allow your character to do or say. Hell, what's the point if you're letting somebody else dictate what your character is going to say? Just run the interaction unless there is a desired solution at which point discussion is your friend.

I freestyle it. I say something with no real plan as to what the other is going to respond and just flow off of what they say.

Sometimes when the answer is predictable I ask more then one questions or quotes which the other player must react to. That way I prevent short few line long post in the RP.
If it really breaks the flow of RP then I PM the other player and post him/her the entire conversation. If he/she agrees I put it in the RP. If not then ask which part he didn't like and make it so to fit his character.

My main characters have always had a loner attitude so they rarely ever had conversations.

I've had the pleasure and misfortune of righting characters here, with permission of course, and my normal routine is to pm them, and ask them how their character talks, how they react and so on and so forth... For the most part I've succeeded, but if there are a million "Likes, and um's" riddled in your character voice then I really hate writing it. Just sayin
