Centuries ago, the emotional spirit of Will Iathos (Ion/Zarathos) casted down a piece of himself to Earth, which he called the Star Essence(Starheart/Zarathos essence). He intended to gift his power to a champion worthy of it. However, the spirit of Greed Mephidian (Mephisto/Ophidian) stole the piece of Iathos's power, corrupting it for his own evil deeds. Mephidian, centuries later, took interest in a young failing motorcyclist Johnny Scott. He gave Scott a deal to make him a better rider, giving him a new motorcycle that was actually bonded with the corrupted Star Essence. At the next performance, Johnny used the motorcycle and performed greatly. He continued for years, Mephidian watching him closely. After a while though, Mephidian grew bored with Scott, and rigged a ramp at his most recent performance to explode, planning on killing Scott. However, the Star Essence sensed the danger as Scott was riding down the ramp and glowed a deep green as the explosion happened. It saved Scott's life. The motorcycle was burning a green fire amazingly. Immediately afterward, the Star Essence telepathically told Johnny to pull a chain from the motorcycle's side and expose it to the green flames. Johnny did so and the chain glowed green, turning from metal to a fiery construct. He wrapped it around his shoulder and walked off out of the arena he was performing in. Once outside, Mephidian confronted him, wanting the Star Essence back. Though corrupted, the Essence still managed to let Johnny use it. Johnny's body burned green and he burst into the same green flames as the motorcycle had, becoming the Emerald Rider. Using this new power, he managed to destroy Mephidian's physical form. He then took the mantle as a hero, using his abilities to fight Mephidian and other's like him.

Bruce Stein was a scientist who taught at a high school. One day he spilled some chemicals in the chemistry lab on the floor, and they created a green fire, surrounding Bruce. One student, Ronnie Jones (Ronnie Raymond/Rick Jones), was running out of the school in panic with everyone else. He saw Stein was still trapped and went to help him. The way in and out was blocked by the green fire, so he ran in through the window and found himself trapped behind the blaze with the doctor. Rick grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to put out the fire, however it only caused a chemical reaction that made it worst. Bruce pushed Ronnie out of the way, only to get burnt by the blaze. In panic he fell backwards into the fire. Teachers and fire-fighters pulled Ronnie outside via the window, saving him from a huge explosion. However, Stein survived, yet became the creature known as... GAMMASTORM! He was a huge, hulking monster made of mostly green fire.
