I just returned to comics after a 25 year hiatus. I am noticing a lot of time travel in the Marvel universe. It really seems to be a crutch to tell what may sometime be a good story. Is anyone else getting tired of all of the time travel? The crazy thing is I do like the "All New X-Men" but the time travel aspect really bothers me.

Hello every one a few questions for you all

1. Now that we have a date for the new Robin in December who do you think it will be?

2. If you could chose who it would be who you pick? My choice would be Stephine Brown as I have not read about her as I started comics with The New 52 and she is a large part of why I am picking up Batman Eternal each week.

3. A bit of a loaded question for you all why are DC so reliant on Batman? Don't get me wrong I do love him and I am buying the five main books.

Batman

Detective Comics

Batman and ...

Batman Eternal

Batman/Superman

Do you think this will hurt DC in the long run as people get sick of Batman and go looking else where for there comic fix?

Love you all thanks for taking the time to answer my questions and doing the podcast each week.

Hey again G-Man and the Robins. I already used that joke but Mat ruined the delivery so I'm doing it again.

Question; what exactly is the User Community Showcase at the bottom of the home page, and why hasn't it been updated for a long long time? Thanks.

Edit: Okay so the day after I posted this a new article appeared on the showcase so I feel slightly foolish. My question still stands though.

Finally; what is your favourite thing to drink? Personally I like cherry cola and strawberry milk.

Hey guys,

Thanks for answering my question (16MAY14), now I'm hooked! So I'll ask another. This is something I've wondered about for a long long time but I can't seem to find an answer on my own (it also makes me a tiny bit mad so I'll point out when I start ranting and you don't have to read that part, but if you want to hear my crazy dream show idea you can skip to the end).

The question is why does Manga turn into Anime so easily in Japan while Western comics have so much trouble sustaining an animated show for more than a few seasons? There are plenty of Anime shows based on Manga that last for hundreds of episodes, that simply follow the plot of the comic. They even make filler episodes to play while they wait for the Manga to move ahead of the show. Meanwhile, we get maybe 50 episodes of great shows like Young Justice and Avengers EMH and then they start all over again.

---This is just ranting now---

How many Batman and Spider-Man shows do we really need anyway!? It's nice in some ways to have different interpretations of something we're familiar with but really, when is it enough? Is it actually a good strategy to keep making the same show over and over again?! Why can't we have an ongoing series that just follows the events and arc from the books?!?!?! Is that so WRONG!!

I had a dream once where Marvel and DC each had one animated show. And that show would follow one character or team through a story arc, over several episodes, then move on to another story with different characters. This could keep everything in the same universe and have plenty of character interactions and team-ups without the show becoming stale and getting cancelled after 2 seasons. Lets say Marvel just ran a long Spider-Man story, they could then have a Thor/Asgard story arc for a while then jump over to an X-men story, or if DC just did a Batman story arc they could switch to Birds of Prey or Green Lantern or anything! There'd be plenty of time before you'd see the same character again plus they could have giant crossovers like Civil War or Blackest Night with all the characters they've already established. AND when certain characters get really popular from other media (like a movie coming out) you could feature them more prominently. ALSO it would be a great platform to showcase less heard of characters and teams like the Thunderbolts, or Swamp Thing, or the Inhumans, or Moon Knight... (the list goes on!). It's basically a large scale version of Justice League Unlimited... Anyway, that's my dream and I guess I'll just keep dreaming about it.

So if you made it this far thanks for reading my question and possibly my ranting, and thanks for the great podcast.

I need three required reading Marvel titles to add to my pull list. The Punisher is the only Marvel book I read and I want to get a better handle on the Marvel Universe. I tried a couple Spider Man and X Men titles but was unable to really get into them. Maybe I should get trades first to get acquainted with the Marvel Universe?

Hey guys, I was wondering what your favorite All-New Marvel series? Also I am a really mainstream reader and I usually just look at DC and MARVEL books but I want to start reading other series outside those two big company's so what would you recommend?

Thanks! Love the podcast, bye.

Why is there not any news for Star Wars comics from Marvel? Maybe I'm just missing the news, but all I've seen is "coming 2015", and nothing else.

Yello, I recently got done reading Daytripper. Any there any other comics like that?

I'm also thinking about starting to read Walking dead and Invincible. There are so many issues and how expensive it's going to be, I can only pick up one of the two. Which do you think I should get?

Hey Tony, Matt and Corey (assuming everyone is there),

My last post was really long (and not very long ago) so this is a quick question. I'm a Travel Agent by trade and I often wonder what my job would be like in the Marvel or DC universe. Considering that everyone on those Earths are used to super powers (eg, people actually live in NYC or Gotham City) I imagine they would also be pretty fearless when traveling, plus a lot of places would cash in on a superhero living there. Something like a cruise to Madripoor, or a luxury resort spa in Themyscira might be common. And I'll bet a cities like Metropolis would run plenty of tours of it's famous superhero sights.

So the question is, where would you like to go on vacation?

I am a big fan of street level, anti-hero, and dark characters and I am interested in reading more about certain characters. I have been only reading current ongoings for some of these character. Can you guys recommend me the best RUN by a writer (In your opinion) for each character.

Punisher (So far I have read Greg Rucka's Punisher, and that run made me a Punisher fan and favorite comic character)

Daredevil

Green Arrow

Moon Knight

Question

Black Panther

And Tony I hear you can't get into Game of Thrones. Well, I was bored watching almost all of season 1. It took me until the last 2 episodes of season 1 to really get into the show. Now it's my 3rd favorite show of all time!! (Behind Breaking Bad and Hannibal of-course). SO keep watching and you will fall in love with the show.

And when will we see the crossover between Assemble After Dark and Comic Vine After Dark? Let's see some action. Ohh yeah!

Heeyy Guys! I've become a huge X-men fan since Bendis has been writing The Marvel Now! titles and have been reading back on other X-men titles such as the Matt Fraction Run, Messiah Complex, Second Coming, and just started reading Claremonts run, I was wondering though what other X-men events are essential reads? (Aside from Dark Phoenix Saga, Age of Apoalyspe and Days of Futures Past) does Onslaught still hold up?

Hey Guys,

After a 20 year hiatus from reading comic books, I am trying to get back into them. When I was reading comic books, I was into such books as Uncanny X-Men, the Amazing Spider-man, Todd McFarlane’s Spider-man, X-Force, and The Flash. Also, I recently picked up Green Arrow: Year Zero and loved both the writing and art.

I found the comicvine podcast pocking around the internet looking for podcasts about comic books, and since the discovery, I have been binge listening to past episodes. The podcast has given me great insight into what check-out and from that insight pick up titles like Thunderbolts and Secret Average. I was wonder if I could get a little more focused advice. Base on my past reading, what are y’all suggestions for a poll list of about 8 books with a mixture titles from Marvel ,DC, and 1 or 2 independents? Also, what are your suggestions for past series/event I should read to get caught up either universes.

The podcast is great! Keep up the good work! Thanks for the help.

Hello all,

Long time listener and big fan of the show, first time question asker. I know you've gotten questions like this in the past, but mine has a bit of a twist. Imagine your pull list is limited as follows:

1. Only four books per month

2. One must be from Marvel, one must be from DC, the other two can be from any publisher who isn't Marvel or DC but both can't be from the same publisher (i.e. if you like Valiant, you can't pick both X-O Manowar and Quantum & Woody, but you could pick X-O Manowar and Saga).

3. You can pick a book that sometimes ships twice monthly (such as Uncanny X-Men), but you can't pick a weekly title (like Futures End).

What would you all choose and why?

For me, I think it'd be:

1. Magneto (Marvel)

2. Green Arrow (DC)

3. X-O Manowar (Valiant)

4. Saga (Image)

Hey guys.

Just had this question posed to me, 'If someone was going to read one comic only, what would you tell them to read?'

I wasn't quite sure what to say, so I went with The Watchmen then changed my mind to Sandman. The conversation started because of Batman so I also said The Dark Knight Returns could be good as well.

Thanks guys and keep up the great work!

Hey Tony, Matt and Corey, I'm a longtime poster on here who got back into these podcasts fairly recently. And I've really enjoyed listening to your interesting discussions and hilarious banter. It's nice to hear you guys relax and talk honestly about comic related stuff whilst ribbing on Mat for hating superheroes :P

I have a few questions if you don't mind my asking. Keep up the awesome work on Comicvine!

  1. This first question is for Tony and I'm writing my post on the day his advanced review of Superman #32 was uploaded. I share his views in that I haven't warmed up too much to New 52 Superman compared to how he was before the reboot. So I was wondering whether you thought Geoff Johns brought back the classic Superman tone in his first issue and whether Superman sounded more like Superman should do? A friendly, kind guy wanting to do the right thing. If you think he did, I am definitely buying that issue as I want to see that Superman back again. The only other writers who've written Superman well in The New 52 are Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder and Greg Pak in my opinion and I'd like to see another writer who can write Superman well.
  2. My next question is; what are all of your thoughts on Dick Grayson being a spy? Do you think this will be a good direction for Dick Grayson or whether it will be as divisive and controversially bad as Superior Spider-Man?

  3. Finally; are any of you guys fans of The Incredibles? If so, are you excited for The Incredibles 2? What do you want to see in the sequel to this Pixar superhero film?

That's all, keep up the great work guys! I'll keep tuning in for the foreseeable future!

Hey Tony, Matt and "Corey" (I'm still sticking with my duel-personality theory). I have just one question this time:

1. Can mind readers read the minds of any race or only their own. For example(alternate universe aside), would Charles Xavier be able to read the mind of Optimus Prime or only humans/mutants? This question randomly popped in my head when listening to the podcast last week, and I wanted to get your opinions or examples in comics.

Thanks for the awesome podcasts that entertain me every week. I am subscribed to around 20 podcasts, yet this one always remains to be my favorite and the one I look forward to the most. Make mine Comic Vine.

Hello podcast of (enter date here). I have two questions for all guests.

You notice a lot of comic series coming to an end due to poor sales or just not a big enough following or even a change in creative direction which leads to their cancellation sadly. My question is, has there ever been a series which ended its run naturally, where it ran its intended course and ended tying up all its loose ends. I can’t think of any in my time of reading a series, probably because I buy the titles less likely to be cancelled.

Second question, if you could be a supporting character to any superhero in a current comic, which would it be and who would you be to them?

Hello everyone (including the guy behind you)

We all know that the silver and golden age of comics had some very weird stories that were retconned (E.G. Lois Lane becoming black, Superman being in a porno and the rainbow batman). So are there any of these types of stories that you wish were still in continuity.

And do you have any recommendations for these characters (pre New-52)...

Red Tornado

Black Canary

Zatanna

Hawkman and/or Hawkwoman

Martian Manhunter and

SHAZAM

Thanks

I've been listening to the podcast for a long time now, and can't recall having heard you ever discuss your opinions on any of the titles below; could you please share any thoughts you might have regarding them?

  • Flex Mentallo: Man of Muscle Mystery
  • Joe the Barbarian
  • Pax Romana
  • Nightly News
  • Rising Stars

.

Edit: A recent "Off My Mind" addressed the issue of the need for more animated comic book shows. You primarily focused on the need for more all-ages programming as an entryway to comic books for younger viewers, but in addition to such I would love to see animated shows that are aimed exclusively at adults. Existing animated series such as Archer, Futurama, and South Park prove that there exists a viable market for mature animated series (all of which were commercially successful apart from any merchandising). Furthermore, series such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which had a huge following among older fans, demonstrate that an adult audience will watch animated series that are action-focused and not merely comedies.

Hey Guys,

I've heard some unusual questions lately, "What's your favorite drink?" so here's one that's comic related but still a little crazy. It's one question with two parts and possibly two different answers. To keep it clean we'll say "Show Off To Your Friends, Marry, Kill". Your choices are Scarlet Johanson, Ann Hathaway and Jessica Alba and then them as their characters Black Widow, Cat Woman and the Invisible Woman. My answers is Scarlet, Ann and Jessica and then Cat Woman, Black Widow and Invisible Woman. I know it's an odd question, it was meant to be.

Have a nice day

Hey guys,

Thanks for answering my question (from 20JUN14) while I was cleaning my toilet. You definitely made that chore less terrible.

I haven't read a new DC book in a while so I'm no expert on the New 52 but when I hear you talking about it I'm always reminded of Ultimate Marvel. I was a big fan and avid reader of the Ultimate Universe, until I fell off after Ultimatum:(, and when you talk about 'which DC character will be reintroduced next?' and 'how different will they be?' I remember thinking the exact same thing about the Ultimate U. Same goes for the fan reactions, like how Colossus was gay, or Nick Fury was black. Some people were outraged and moaned about it, but the key difference was that Marvel never replaced the traditional 616 Universe with the Ultimate one. So fans couldn't really get too upset.

So my question is twofold;

- Should DC have kept the New 52 separate from the Old 52?

- At this point has DC succeeded with what they had hoped to accomplish with the New 52? (and if you can tell me what they had hoped to accomplish that would be a bonus)

Hello everyone a few questions for you again.

1. There has been a rumor going around for a while now that DC will use the upcoming crisis to revert the new 52 back to the old DCU do you think they would go through with it? I could see DC merging The New 52 with the old universe but this time coming up with a clear and conscience time line of what has actually happened.

2. Will the TV shows on CW be in the same universe as the movies? I personally hope so as it would take care of a lot of world building and you would not have to give every hero his/her own origin movie just give them an arc on one of the shows.

3. Another rumor this time concerning Marvel. This one going around was they are going to use all the time travel going on in the Marvel Universe to re boot it. In The Reboot they would get rid of the Mutants and replace them with Inhunams as Marvel does not own the movie rights for them. This was later debunked but do you think they would actually do it just to spite Fox or would they lose to much money in the comics?

4. Do you think we will ever see the big movie studios for Marvel playing nicely with one another regarding the rights to the characters? I would love to see a Civil War on the big and small screen but getting everyone on the same page would be impossible. Since you have Spiderman at Sony , X-Men and Fantastic Four at Fox and the rest at Marvel.

Thanks all as always love all the work you guys do on the site.

Hey guys and maybe gal, have a little bit of an off topic question but something t I think many people would be interested in hearing. My question is when did you decide what exactly you are doing with you life, I guess to rephrase it would be say G-man how did you decide from math teacher to working for comic vine, was it hard to make that switch and it must have been a scary decision to make with a wife and kid or Corey how did you decide that you would own a comic shop, that's another big leap, Mat I heard you recently quit a teaching job? I guess I am at a point in my life I have a full time job but it's not what I want to be doing for the rest of my life and I am wanting to do something different but it's just very hard and scary to make a switch (I have a wife to think about also), basically wanting to hear other peoples experiences. Everyone has heard your origin stories just wondering about your thought processes and how each of you made the decision? It's cool if nobody wants to answer that question it's a little personal, so default question is How do you think Guardians of the Galaxy will do this August?

Hey guys! I realize this is kind of redundant given we're two/three (however long until it takes you to read this) years since the new 52 started but… how the hell is damien alive at all given the five year timeline? Meaning, how could he be ten years old? And don't say super fast aging or whatever b/c in the first batman and robin annual they said that he fought his mother every year on his birthday in order to meet his dad. Again, I realize its redundant to bring it up now, but are y'all aware of anything that explains his existence given the five year timeline?

Hey guys! This week I've got a question for you all about the Fantastic Four.

So basically, I've never read an FF comic. My only exposure to the team has been the two awful films, the two fairly bad animated series, and whatever coverage on them I've seen on the internet. For some reason, I've always wanted to be interested in them, but something about them just doesn't seem to click with me.

Now I know it's not fair to judge a comic on its other media, so I'd like you all to recommend your favourite FF runs to me. They have so many runs by acclaimed comic creators that it's hard for an FF noob like me to know where to start. Do I jump on right now with James Robinson? Do I go back to Hickman's run, or Waid's, or Byrne's, or Lee and Kirby's? You get the idea.

So thanks for helping me out with this, I really appreciate it, and I love you all.

Hello Tony, Corey, and Matt! I discovered comicvine through my brother about a year ago and since then I've used it for basically any and all comic information I needed. My brother would always tell me to make an account and listen to the podcasts but I never had a chance till recently. I started listening to both podcasts (old and new episodes) and found myself enjoying every second of them. I then made this account and wanted my first post to be this question to you guys.

So my question pertains to dynamite's gold key lineup. In addition to my dc marvel books I recently picked up the 4 gold key books and found myself really enjoying them. I was wondering what your opinion is on them. I saw that the first issue was reviewed for each but I'm curious if you guys still read them and which you like the most. So far Turok is my personal favorite, issue 5 was awesome.

Thankyou for your time, and keep up the good work.

Deadly Class is INCREDIBLE. I'm 100% loving every single issue and that doesn't happen with many comics for me. I am not a big fan of Remender's writing after reading Uncanny X-Force, Uncanny Avengers and Black Science, but this series does it. Best comic being published ATM IMO.

And Superman #32 might be the first comic of Superman I actually really enjoyed reading. Geoff Johns did what even Scott Snyder and Grant Morrison couldn't do for me, make me care about Superman with just 1 issue. DO you guys think Geoff Johns is going to give Superman a Green Lantern and Aquaman treatment?

And Corey, community is back! POP! POP!!! ANd you all should watch Fargo. Awesome Awesome Show.

Hola three amigos! We missed you guys at Heroescon ;D But thats okay, I know you guys have an incredibly intense and busy schedule, just hope to see you guys there one day! It's a really fanciful and fun weekend, with a lot of creators and artists just waiting to be interviewed!

However, I digress, on to the question!! I've recently been tracking backward in the Marvel publication history, and I'm in the middle of reading Young Avengers: The Children's Crusade, and just finished Avengers: Disassembled. Both of these stories have one thing in common. They both feature Scarlet Witch prominently. Now, this might be an easy question to answer, but I'm just plain confused… could you explain to me the history of Wanda and what led her down the path of insanity? Also, after reading Disassembled, and even House of M, would you say she is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe? I mean if she can completely shift reality or near bring a species to extinction with a word… That's pretty, pretty, pretty powerful. Galactus better watch out. As always, thank you for all you guys do! I will continue to listen until you guys stop putting out great podcast, after great podcast.

Long Live the Carol Corps!

Hey Tony, Corey...and Matt? Probably not Jen, but if you're there, Jen too! It's been a while since I've had any questions to ask that seemed even a little bit worthwhile to ask you guys, but something came up recently that blew my mind. For years I have credited Green Lantern as the character that got me into reading; not just comics, but reading at all. I could even remember the cover of the exact issue. So I decided to look it up on Comicvine and saw that the publication date wasn't until 1983. Then I remembered reading a black and white digest of New Teen Titans reprints including the first three issues that my mom bought me in line at the grocery store. That digest from 1982 was my real first comic and, as it turns out, started my love of reading while also introducing me to my 2 favorite characters in comics: Dick Grayson and Wally West. This brings me to my question. Do you remember the very first comic you ever read and what was it? By the way, the fact that the Titans book pre-dated the Green Lantern issue really made my day. That Lantern issue was absolutely disposable while the Titans book remains a landmark.

Hey Tony, Matt, and Corey got a question for you. I got the omnibus of Rick Remender's Uncanny X-force and was towards the end of the dark angle saga when I made a discovery. When kid apocalypse shows up and slams archangel through a window there are a couple of statues in the background and 1 of them is Dr Mind Bubble from his current Captain America run! So the question is have any of you ever gone back to an older book and found anything like this?

A Question for all of you. You've probably been asked it before, but it's always a good one.

Who is your favorite live action Joker and why?

  1. Cesar Romero (1960's TV show)
  2. Jack Nicholson
  3. Heath Ledger

Who is your favorite voice of the Joker and why?

  1. Mark Hammil (The Animated Series)
  2. Kevin Michael Richardson (The Batman)
  3. Jeff Bennet (Brave and Bold)
  4. John Dimaggio (DC Animated Movies)

Who was your favorite out of all them and why (including any I may have missed)?

Perhaps another idea for your 2 minute time-out: When I was a kid, comic books were intended for kids but then you grew up and read real books. Have comic books reached the status where they can be considered "real books" and thus considered a legitimate source of entertainment for adults? Or do people still generally raise their eyebrows and roll their eyes when you tell them you picked up the latest issue of Magneto which was fantastic and think they might like as well?

Hey guys.

I was just going through Netflix Uk and I discovered that there was a Spider Woman Animated show in 1979. I had no idea that this show existed. Just wondering if you had heard of it? If so is it worth watching?

Hi again,

I was thinking back to Tony's comment (obsession?) about whether Spider-Man wears underwear under his costume of goes commando and it lead me to this similar, and I believe more perplexing, question. Does Silver Surfer wear underwear?

Check out these examples of new and old Surfer. They definitely drew underwear lines, but why the heck would he need underwear?? And why would it be the same colour as his skin???

Heeeey guys! Another question of "Should I read this" I've never read Daredevil before and I just recently started to become interested in the character, if I were to read daredevil which run should I start with? Bendis, Brubaker, or Waid? (I wanted a more modern take on the character which is why I left out Miller's run) lol anyways thanks guys

From my understanding Bruce Wayne has never really let himself move on from his parent's murder, and became Batman, but do you think Alfred had a part in that as well? Alfred became a father to him sort of and has helped him in his career as Batman, and helped him become Batman. Do you think Alfred could have helped Bruce move past his parent's murder in a healthy way and become a more well adjusted person? Do you think Alfred helped nurture or even push Bruce towards his vigilante life?

Hey Guys,

I'm currently reading Green Arrow and Red Hood and the Outlaws. My buddy s3kshun62 showed me Conner Hawk stuff. Is there any Roy Harper stuff you guys could recommend? Keep up the good work on the podcast. Nightwing is a good choice Matt, but Red hood was the superior Robin.

Hey monkey-butts, with the recently released 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' getting great reviews, I thought I'd ask about the series here.

First of all, are any of you fans of the series? I was thinking of going back and watching the reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but I've never watched the original series of films and I was wondering if I'm missing out or if I can skip those.

Secondly, have there been any good Planet of the Apes comics that you would recommend?

And thirdly, if you had a choice between Chinese and Indian food, what would you pick?

Do you feel that the adaptation of comic book characters into other media tends to create a harmful feedback loop which negatively affects the characters in the original comic book medium? Allow me to explain: because comics target more focused demographics and have comparatively low production costs, creators have greater artistic freedom. However, in adapting such characters to film, television, and video games changes are often made to appeal to broader audiences, with studios often courting the absolute lowest common denominator. This then becomes the version of the character most familiar to the general public, and in a vain attempt to increase comic sales, the original version of the character in the comics is altered to reflect the changes made in other media.

Example:

Superhero costumes have become increasing visually busy since the advent of the modern superhero films, needlessly adding texture, piping, and other frills. In live action, because costumes are constructed out of real world material, this is a necessary part of translating the character from the printed page to the screen. When the processes is reversed, however, characters lose their strong and iconic silhouettes.

.

All that said, I'd love it if the new Robin that comes out of Robin Rises were none other than GCPD Detective John Blake. That's one place the comics can steal from the films.
