Very few creators know how to handle Kirby designs Steve Rude and Erik Larsen among those few. It is a better design than any of Jim Lees JL crap that is for sure.
I guess it's not absolutely horrible. It's nothing special either. These New Gods aren't going to be Kirby's New Gods anyways. I'll give them a try, but knowing that this Orion isn't the one I knew from before.

It's good, probably one of the best new costumes DC put out in the dcnu, it's what a redesigned costume should be, something that draws inspiration from and pays respect to the original, doesn't make to many glaring or unnecessary changes, and improves, modernizes or cleans up the design as a whole for a new audience to accept without needing an explanation of why anyone would possibly make certain design choices in the first place.The astro harness could have been designed better but if anyone has a problem with it the next artist will probably make subtle changes that will hopefully be in the right direction.
Any version with that ridiculous harness-cycle is lame. Seriously, why wouldn't he have a harness that fit him like an exo-skeleton with a chest or arm blasters? That thing he rides is stupid-looking.

I agree. Ilike the way Orion looks, bu his astro harness needs more work. I know this will sound silly, but right now it looks too frail for someone like Orion.
@DarkKnight96000: I have no issue with this whatsoever. Both work. The comparison of the two pictures isn't a great example either. Cliff's drawing is more subdued and grounded with muted colors and more realistic human proportions while the other is over the top with kirby dots and exaggerated musculature.

Just because he drew one of my favorite comics doesn't make him a good artist. Maybe I'm forgetting others he drew (I mostly think of him as an editor) but I never liked his style with Wonder Woman at least. Only comic I can recall his style working was the awesome Beware the Creeper miniseries.

The costume is great, especially on the design page. The Astro-Harness could use some work; it loses some of its magic from design page to panel. Perhaps Chiang will do a better job next issue. Maybe this is a bad perspective.
@ComicMan24: To me, the new thing is just... bland. Morrison's design had style and actually somewhat looked like a uniform for a heavenly soldier. This one just looks like a biker dude on a retarded bike. Which isn't to say it's not an improvement over the original though.
@AtPhantom:That I can understand, yeah. But we don't know if that costume is what he wears all the time or just something he wears to travel around. He might have another one for battle. And haven't read the issue so I have no idea really.
I was under the impression that the new look was "supposed" to have a retro '50s type feel to it.It looks sleek to me,nice.I'm not a fan of "Kirby design",I think his art is very overrated so any change to the New Gods is great for me.
His glider and motherbox are powerful cosmic tech.
I think Orion should have full mental control over the harness. For example, when he jumps off to fight, the glider can change shape, like the lower part can fold up and align with the body and the part where he can shoot the Astro Force. Then it can go destroy armadas and armies on its own. Or bust solar systems or what not.
Also the New Gods really need to amp it up for this reboot. This is a new start, get good writers to write a Orion series. Mark Waid, Azzarello, Morrison, or Daredevil or Hawekeye writers. Heck, get Snyder. Somebody who understands Kirby.
Orion can be an impetuous jerk but still be the extremely smart war god he was in the Simonson run. He can be vulnerable as a character.
His new design's better than the old though. I like Chiang's first design. The Harness needs to look better too IMO.
Have Orion use those damn braclets/wristbands for once. He can channel the Astro Force from his body to his bands and start bustin' armies of demons or monsters.
I've read the Silver Surfer tie in to Infinity. orion can use the harness like the Surfer sometimes. Jump out of it, bust big, and shoot powerful blasts.
I'd love to see Orion showing his powers. Astro Force = the fury of the Source. The Source's energy running through each and every New God. Orion also gets immensely stronger if he gets pissed, also gets reckless but becomes an unstoppable war machine and a fighter. use his beastlike rage and animalistic fighting style as his own war art.
As for his helmet, I like the design. SOO much better than his older looks. He's also more handsome and young looking.
Show the audience the warrior god of new genesis! WE MISS THE DOG OF WAR!!!

I'd also like it if his Harness was capable of detaching from him. And he still needs to ride the Harness. And the Harness can change shape but Orion and the Harness are one so the Astro Force can still be channeled then emitted from the main body of the Harness. It can also fly w/o Orion on it and can act truly as Orion's extension by recce, combat, and flight. I think his gloves/gauntlets are better than the braclet/band idea. But I like his nu52 helmet a lot better though.
