Poll: Would you give up Free Will for World Peace? (45 votes)

Sure, I'd live in that world 4%
No way, no one tells me what to do 78%
I'm Neutral 18%
I don't understand the question 0%

I was recently watching the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spinoff (personally one I find superior to Buffy) Angel, and in its fourth season, it raised an interesting question. A deity known as "Jasmine" came on the scene and anyone who saw her, would instantly worship her as a god and be supremely loyal to her. Through this, all other conflicts were eliminated since most had the common unifying trait of loving Jasmine (she also ate people, but I digress)

So, it got me thinking, would you give up your free will for world peace? In this scenario, a being comes to Earth who has the power to make anyone worship it as their one and only god, you will do whatever is in your power to to appease this being, however, you still go about your regular days and duties as well, i.e, spending time with friends, family, working etc. You are devoted so much to the being that you are willing to die for it and refuse to question its motives or rulings.

Because everyone on the planet is entralled with it, wars cease to exist, all crime, hate, prejudice and greed is gone because loving the being comes first. Question is, would this be a world you'd choose to live in?

No way, bro, but I wouldn't hold it against anyone who did.

So...the lives of billions of people versus my own thoughts.

Unfortunately, I actually value my thoughts.

Same here. I'd rather take the bad with the good of today and still have my own free will. But it isn't that bad of an alternative.

No, war makes me stronger. On a more serious note, possibly. I'm a bit of a pacifist, so I hate war, or fighting in general. I'm going with neutral. Let the world decide it's own fate.

That not peace. So no. :\

#11 Posted by potter1000 (44 posts) - - Show Bio

Absolutely I would. If I'm understanding the scenario correctly, it's basically like a very fanatical religion...only without the hate and violence that other fanatical religions can breed. And It's not like I will be a mindless zombie, I'd be myself...only I'd face toward that entity every day and pray to it lol. Beats opening a newspaper and hearing about a public place being shot up again.

But it we gave up our free will and are so devoted that we don't question this deitys' motives, it could easily decide to make us fight each other.

The promise of world peace could just be a way of tricking us into destroying ourselves.

I wouldn't want to risk it.

Peace under illusion is not true peace. it's only meaningful if the real world manages to accomplish it.

- Gaara

Basically replace illusion with no free will, an it's the same feeling.

Is this what you mean? Then no.

#16 Posted by martyyy15 (1223 posts) - - Show Bio

@dabee: damn it you did it befpre me lol. But yeah...no. the guardians are wrong, we need frr will.

Those willing to sacrifice safety over freedom deserve neither...

I'd rather live in The Road then 1984

It's everyone in the world who doesn't have free will, right? If so then the answer is no. So there's world peace but we are all mindless automatons without emotion. Free will is apart of having emotion. Without free will, we wouldn't feel things either. So screw world peace, I'll stay flawed with the rest of humanity and the world.

Never. Not even in the face of Armageddon.

Choose your fate, mortal fool.

that way there is no resistance

This is another god that has issues with free will, but hey, no wars on his world.

#28 Posted by InnerVenom123 (29499 posts) - - Show Bio

That's a terrible idea.

#29 Posted by Lvenger (19277 posts) - - Show Bio

I don't believe there is really free will but there's no way I'd submit to this being. Sounds exactly like forced peace that's come about via artificial means. And I'm an atheist so needless to say I have issues with supreme deities and all that.

#30 Edited by lykopis (10752 posts) - - Show Bio

Absolutely terrifying. Never.

#31 Posted by Lady_Liberty (8279 posts) - - Show Bio

No. Blood is the price of freedom.

#32 Edited by FadeToBlackBolt (23334 posts) - - Show Bio

I'd give up everyone else's free will in exchange for world peace under GodKing FadeToBlackBolt.

I am not giving up my freedom because a bunch of immature adults can't learn to at least tolerate those different from them.

#36 Edited by BadVoodoo (381 posts) - - Show Bio

83% Freedom vs 17% Safety

for once in my life, i am actually proud of the internet. Thanks guys, my faith in humanity is restored.
