Female spotted hyena vs Alpha Male wolf at his prime
Round 1: Alone, bloodlusted normal weight
Round 2: Groups
This is a great battle in the animal kingdom because it will NEVER happen in the wild.
Are they in packs or is it solo confrontation? The answer greatly affects my decision.

Round one the solo wolf gets mega stomped. A hyena has the strongest bite force of any living mammal. The wolf is dead once that hyena gets her jaws around his neck.
Round two the wolves will take it, a wolf pack consists of around 6-9 wolves, and they are probably one of the last things you'd want to encounter in the wild. They'll attack in such a formation with each wolf moving like clockwork in each strike. And if they're losing, they'll flee. I just don't see the Hyena taking round 2.
@captainuzi: mega-stomped? What about the wolfs thick fur around the neck and quickness? And actually the grizzly bear (( 1200 psi, )) hippo (( 1821 psi)) , and jaguar (( 2000 psi )) all have stronger bites than the hyena (( 1100 ))
Check your facts, the hyena has the strongest bite.
Maybe not megastomped, but the odds are in the Hyenas favor. For sake of matching we should make it clear what the weight for each animal is though, 175-175 seems fair but it's up to you OP. Also I'm only assuming we're using the ofl portrayed in the picture, a grey wolf.
Taken from yahoo answers..
"Good question. Despite what some people here seem to think, both are skilled pack hunters. Hyenas are not mere scavengers - they are powerful predators capable of taking down large and dangerous prey like wildebeest and even buffalo in the case of the spotted hyena. They are certainly not cowardly. Grey wolves also take on large and dangerous prey, such as moose, and like hyenas, they do so in groups. A lone wolf would be suicidal to attack a moose - it can weigh ten times what a single wolf does.
There are three species of wolf and three species of hyena, which means the outcome of a fight would depend largely on which species you are referring to. The grey wolf can weigh up to 175 pounds, the red wolf up to 90, and the Ethiopian wolf up to 40. The spotted hyena usually weighs around 155 pounds, though there are reports of large females weighing up to 200. Striped hyenas weigh up to 88 pounds, and brown hyenas 105 pounds.
I would put money on any species of hyena to defeat a red wolf or Ethiopian wolf - all three hyena species have bone-crushing jaws that could snap the wolf's neck in a single bite, and though the red wolf approaches the striped and brown hyena in weight, it is less muscular and most likely not as strong. A grey wolf would most likely win against a striped or brown hyena, since it is generally larger and therefore probably stronger. It is also quicker and more agile, meaning it could avoid the hyena's bone-crunching bite. A fight between a grey wolf and a spotted hyena could go either way, depending on the individuals involved. Since both reach similar weights they are probably around the same strength, and each has its advantages - the wolf has speed and agility, the hyena has its powerful jaws. It would depend on the age, size, sex, health, experience and so on of the particular wolf and hyena involved."
Yeah, a battle thread. Summon the mods s'il vous plait?
Mocking me?
@rouflex: Just a bit. :)
@captainuzi: Uh whats the hyenas bite force? yahoo isn't very trustworthy to be honest,
@captainuzi: oooh nooo lol do NOT check wikipedia, any old joe can edit that
Look it up on discovery channel and watch a whole special on it then, I don't know what to tell you. But the Hyena has the absolute strongest bite of any living mammal.
It will beat the wolf solo. But the wolf pack might be able to take a pack of 4-6 Hyenas.

I saw that too. They used to have a versus show where two animals would have a hypothetical fight. I remember them saying the hyena has the strongest bite of any other animal.
@captainuzi: @tparks:
please no. Discovery was wrong, the hyena was tested at 1100 from every other official animal site. If it had what you were saying , 11,400 psi, it would have more biteforce than 2 crocodiles combined, and thats just unrealistic.
@captainuzi: what are their sources because if thats its bite-force, the hyena has the strongest bite force of all animals
@nighthunder: From what I have looked up, the Gorilla, Jag and Hippo all have much stronger bite force than 1,100 PSI.
@wolfrazer: no, captain is saying the hyena has a 11,400 psi, stronger than any known anima;
@nighthunder: Oh...guess I was missing a 0 in there, but 11k PSI? What?...No...no....that's stupid.
@wolfrazer: shurg - i GUESS national g said it
@nighthunder: Oh...guess I was missing a 0 in there, but 11k PSI? What?...No...no....that's stupid.
it's 1100 psi lol, not 11k psi. And It's not the strongest animal bite force. Grizzly, hippo, croc, jaguar, even gorilla has a higher bite force. Wolf's bite is about 400, though. It should be enough for an opponent at this level.
@princearagorn1: Ya I know, but CaptainUzi was saying that.

I don't know, I was just going from what I heard on TV. TV doesn't lie ever. Just like the internet.
I never claimed to be a specialist. Just referring to what I've seen from the television. Just like tparks said, the TV never lies.
I believe a female hyena would get wrecked by a Alpha male but a male adult hyena could take a wolf without too much problems. A wolf weights 80-150 pounds, a hyena weights 120-200 pounds so they have a size advantage also they bite much harder. The only thing the wolf has in advantage is probably their thick fur.
Hyena would destroy both rounds.
Numbers ain't going to matter when these fools are successful at pushing Prides of Lions off.

Hyena's won't even touch an injured male Lion but i do favor Hyena's in both rounds.
@hellionvulcan: Never said they could fight lions. Sometimes they manage to push lions off of kills. Their scavenging level of success is through the roof.

Heck no. The Nile Crocodile/ Salt Water Crocodile far exceed the Hyena's bite.

@captainuzi: @knightsofdarkness2: Dude, he said of MAMMALS... not reptilian animals... crocodiles are NOT mammals.
As far as hyenas go, nothing that he said is wrong. Hyenas have some of the strongest bites of all mammals, rivaled only by lions and tigers.
Hyenas are also much more durable than wolves, and have a weight advantage.
In terms of intelligence, they far outweigh wolves, having intelligence that is considered supreme in the animal kingdom, rivaled only by the great apes and dolphins. Wolves have NEVER been discovered to have intelligence rivaling and comparable to that of the great apes or dolphins.
Also, cap, since you're quoting National Geographic (which is, indeed, a very credible source), not only do hyenas have some of the strongest bites of all MAMMALS, but they also have intelligence that rivals that of the great apes and dolphins, something that has never been discovered or proven about wolves.
Also, hyenas have a weight advantage and are MUCH more durable than wolves. They have far more robust builds. It would take the wolf a few bites to evenly remotely damage the hyenas, but only one bite from the hyenas will cripple the wolves.
While still losing one on one, hyenas give a hell of a better fight and hold their own against leopards WAY better than do wolves against cougars.
Hyenas, even at the same weight, are stronger, faster, and more durable, intelligent, and endurant than wolves. Only advantage that wolves have is agility, but that won't do much. Doesn't help that hyenas are larger.
One on one, the wolf is absolutely no match for the hyena and gets demolished.
Pack against pack, the hyenas stomp the wolves at least as hard as, though probably even harder than, they do one on one.
@nighthunder: I want a source for the Jaguar's bite force
@raimundopedrosa: Lol, must have misread his post. But basically what I was trying to say is that the Hyena does not have the strongest bite which 1 or 2 folks in this thread have been saying.

Oh, okay haha no worries. But hyenas do megastomp even at parity, and at average weights, they win 7-8/10 times.
Hyenas don't have the strongest bite of ALL ANIMALS, but they do have amongst the strongest MAMMALS bites for sure, with the only close contenders/rivals in terms of MAMMAL bite force being tigers and lions.
hyenas push around african wild dogs which are pretty much the size as wolfs... what threats can a wolf offer to a hyena that african wild dog cant?
hyenas for both rounds sadly
Can't believe a crap-looking animal beats a badass king of snow.
Hyena wins its bite is no joke. And for anybody above its not the highest in animal kingdom. You still got saltwater crocs and sharks
Pretty sure a hyena stomps a Wolf 1v1. Round 2 could go either way tho. Wolves seem to be a bit more agressive in a pack and are traveling in larger ones
