Matters how Number II does. If it does even close to what Avengers did (which so far has been the best superhero movie to date) then the answer is and easy

yes.

Lord of the Rings has about a 2.9 billion total worldwide box office gross, without 3D.

Considering they made all 3 LotR movies for 90 million each - no one is going to beat that.

Return of the King won several academy awards too.

Maybe or maybe not. Will the superhero movie still be relevant when the third comes out?

For real or with the fixed numbers they do?

Hollywood numbers keep getting bigger even when they sell less tickets every year.

Due to the long-term effects of inflation, notably the significant increase of movie theater ticket prices, the list unadjusted for inflation gives far more weight to later films.[12] The unadjusted list, while commonly found in the press, is therefore largely meaningless for comparing films widely separated in time, as many films from earlier eras will never appear on a modern unadjusted list, despite achieving higher commercial success when adjusted for price increases.

The measuring system for gauging a film's success is based on unadjusted grosses, mainly because historically this is the way it has always been done due to the practices of the film industry: the box office receipts are compiled by theaters and relayed to the distributor, which in turn releases them to the media.[20] Converting to a more representative system that counts ticket sales rather than gross is also fraught with problems due to the fact that the only data available for older films are the sale totals.[16] As the motion picture industry is highly oriented towards marketing currently released films, unadjusted figures are always used in marketing campaigns so that new blockbuster films can much more easily achieve a high sales ranking, and thus be promoted as a "top film of all time",[14][21] so there is little incentive to switch to a more robust analysis from a marketing or even newsworthy point of view.[20]

Star Wars A New Hope Stomps The Avengers in Tickets Sales and in Adjusted Gross.

Episode 5 and 6 also sold more that Avengers.

Star Wars original trilogy is too big to be taken down.

@danhimself: no. box office only

ok...just did a search and looking at the top ten highest grossing list...Avengers already has them all beat individually...if the next two do as well then they'll easily beat them combined

@deathpoolthet1000: so guessing from reading the last sentence of your novel its a NO

No since Avatar by itself stomped The Avengers and No since the real numbers show movies are selling less tickets.

adjusting for inflation the original star wars trilogy is only at 2.7 billion. That doesn't even beat LotR. And A New Hope is only 1.3 billion adjusting for inflation, which is less than Avengers too.

my guess right now is that Avatar 2 won't do nearly as well as the first...they've waited way to long to bring the second film out and they aren't even going to start filming the 2nd film until October of next year

I don't think the avengers will be a trilogy. Marvel will probably make like 5 avengers movies. But if it does turn out to be a trilogy then maybe it'll be the best financially. But they'll be mediocre quality, considering the first one was nowhere near oscar worthy. So that means that the original Star Wars trilogy and The Lord of the rings trilogy will always be the best when talking about quality.

No they adjusted this for only one movie.

Star Wars a New Hope was called Star Wars alone when it came out, this is what make the confusion on the numbers.

All the websites point a New Hope to be the second place.

http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

You could notice the whole original trilogy is in the top 20, then Lotr is way down, at the place 52.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_films

The number they point is not franchise, if you click in their link of Star Wars it sends you to a New Hope.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Episode_IV:_A_New_Hope

Box office

Star Wars remains one of the most financially successful films of all time. The film earned $1,554,475 through its opening weekend ($5.99 million in today's terms), building up to $7 million weekends as it entered wide release ($27 million in today's terms).[3] It replaced Jaws as the highest-earning film in North America just six months into release,[81] eventually earning over $220 million during its initial theatrical run ($848 million in today's terms).[82]Star Wars entered international release towards the end of the year, and in 1978 added the worldwide record to its domestic one,[83] earning $410 million in total.[84] Reissues in 1978, 1979, 1981, and 1982 brought its cumulative gross in Canada and the U.S. to $323 million,[85] and extended its global earnings to $530 million.[86] The film remained the highest-grossing film of all time until E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial broke that record in 1983.[87]

750 Million bucks from the 70s, almost a billion buck from the 70s, this puts above the 2 billions mark.

Following the release of the Special Edition in 1997,[88]Star Wars briefly reclaimed the North American record before losing it again the following year to Titanic.[89] In total, the film has earned $775,398,007 worldwide (including $460,998,007 in North America alone).[3] Adjusted for inflation, it has earned over $2.5 billion worldwide at 2011 prices, making it the most successful franchise film of all time.[90]According to the Guinness World Records, the film ranks as the third-highest-grossing film when adjusting for inflation;[91] at the North American box office, it ranks second behind Gone with the Wind on theinflation-adjusted list.[92]

@deathpoolthet1000: @danhimself: actually I apologise guys. I just double checked the numbers

adjusted for 2013 inflation

Star Wars Original Trilogy - 5.6 billion+ (worldwide)

Lord of the Rings Trilogy - 4.1 billion+ (worldwide)

A New hope by itself adjusted for 2013 inflation made 2.8 billion dollars. (worldwide)

so yeah. Star Wars stomps. And we haven't even discussed 3D yet.

Star Wars is too big, just too big for his own good.

Also dont worry, once i was talking with a crazy Lotr fan, i show him the number and he keep Lotr made more money.

Yeah, without 3D Avengers numbers dont looks that amazing, it muts made pretty much the same number TDK did.

does that factor in the fact that both the Star Wars trilogy and LotR trilogy were both in theaters more than once or is just the numbers for their first release?

I don't see Avengers 2 and 3 doing nearly as well as 1. The movies were cool because of what they did for cinema. But they are going to get very old very fast.

@russellmania77: it kind of was as far as story but i disagree with thay. T3 was awesome cause of arnold. He saved that movie.

Besides you can have a trio just because theres a forth one doesnt mean much. If a trilogy storyline wise ends one saga. I consider it a trilogy thats what both trans and terminator did. Originally t4 wasbsupposed to be the first of a new trilogy but got canned for reboot instead.

People have odd ways of defining success when they're trying to say Terminator is in the same running as Avengers. Outside T2 the Terminator series leaves a lot to be desired and I'm almost certain it's made nowhere near the same kind of money as franchise.

I would say it's to early to tell at this stage, who knows by the time Avenger 3 hits screens people could be completely done with super hero pictures (helpfully not). Personally though I don't count box office totals as any indication of whether or not a film is successful.

Some people are funny on here when they assume Avengers are automatically going to be "the best" triology ever. Sure Terminator ain't perfect but I highly doubt Avengers 2 and 3 will break the first one...most sequels rarely do.

I hope they call Avengers 3 Marvel The End.

And I think Avengers are looking at a stiff competition with Superman Batman.

A fair point, although I do think if done right Superman/Batman will do better because it's never been done before in DCU on the big screen. Avengers, people kind of know what to expect.

The first movie was a "right time" kinda happening. I highly doubt the sequel will make as much money. We will see though.

Agreed.

Dont worry, you at least understand the concept and idea of inflation, you could notice several people who fail to understand how they play with the numbers to make new movies look better and old look worst.

People also fail to notice, that several movies were a huge hit when they came out, but sold poorly on DVD,VHS and never got good tv deals.

Some movies made money after they failed at the box office.

Both monetarily and critically, id say yes. Amongst fans/ the audience? Probably not. Star Wars for one stands far taller than the Avengers created in the first movie could ever hope to, imo. As does LotR and the Dark Knight Trilogy.

If JLA starts off strong, id even give it the nod monetarily, though, after seeing the critics hating on MoS, I suspect Avengers will continue to be a critical darling. Especially since stinkers like The Dark World and Iron Man 1 & 2 were reviewed positively.

@vaeternus: There is a thing called inflation, @fallschirmjager show the end number of both franchises, Lotr did 1.5 billions less that Star Wars Original Trilogy, besides one movie by itself made 2.8 billions.

And no is not just in the USA is worlwide box office.

Thats why manyepeople uses ticket sales, but manye people refuse to belive ticket sales because it make the 21 century hits looks really small in comparation with the 20 century hits.

We can't possibly say right now because we have no idea how good the other two movies will be.

Basically this. Even though the first Avengers movie managed to make over 1.5 billion dollars worldwide, we would have to see how the other two will fare and whether or not the superhero movie genre will stay popular by the time Avengers 3 comes out.

One time back in high school me and my friend were talking about making plans for the weekend, and he brought up, "Let's have a movie marathon of some kind." And I was like, "For sure! How about the original Star Wars trilogy back to back? That would be incredible." and he was like, "Yeah, totally, except those movies are terrible! Let's watch the LOTR trilogy instead, now that would be an experience."

I didn't speak to him after for like 2 weeks. we never had that hangout weekend

Seeing how well the first one did and how Marvel/Disney is setting up the other Avengers films by expanding their universe and their roster I don't see why they can't be the most successful.

...

I also prefer to judge a movies succeds via worldwide success not just domestic. The numbers dont lie. Lotr made more cash then sw. Imdb and the sites ive posted confirm it.

So far Harry Potter is the top movie series. Dunno if Avengers can top that.

How? Only a New Hope Did 2.8 Billions By Inflation @fallschirmjager point this.

Lotr did more money for the fact the ticket was more expensive, that is what inflation means.

The numbers point the American Market being really smaller that the international market.

Star Wars International Market was bigger that USA market by far.

Maybe Lotr was bigger in some markets, but not worldwide.

adjusted for inflation

Star Wars Original Trilogy - 5.6 billion+

Lord of the Rings Trilogy - 4.1 billion+

A New hope by itself adjusted for 2013 inflation made 2.8 billion dollars.

so yeah. Star Wars stomps. And we haven't even discussed 3D yet.
