frowned upon but eating poorly isn't?
Discuss.
Because food can't give you cancer.
Because eating isn't unhealthy.
Because food is love.. food is life.
@bullpr: You can stop eating poorly and many foods are toxic.
No. Like really not. You have more and more studies between your microbiota (for example the commensal flora of your GI tract) and several diseases. And other studies between microbiota and type of diet.
But you won't find any nutriment associated with the cascade of cellular mutations that is the basis of any cancer.
So no. Really no.
It shouldn't be frowned upon. Smoking is pure badassery. People should learn smoking since their breastfeeding time.

It doesn't mean anything "stop eating poorly".
If you are hungry and you have a Big Mac menu available for less than $10, you going to buy it. No everyone can afford good TASTY and healthy food.
What do you call "toxic".
I don't know any source of nutriment that is toxic.

Alrighty, then, in English please?
Because it isn't nice to hang out with somebody whose clothes smell like smoke, and who smokes while you're eating for example. It's annoying.
Are we talking eating poorly as in to the point of obesity which can kill and cause everything else mentioned above (except maybe cancer, idk) or just the regular bag of chippo's?

Hmm. I tried to be as mainstream as I could.
-Yes, what you eat can change the composition of the bacteria that are not pathogens (=commensal) that live in your belly (=GI tract)
-Yes, these commensal bacteria play an important role in your immunity (=Host defense)
This is a very hot topic and a lot of funding is allowed to study that.
The jump to the general population that food can give cancer is not true.
A cancer is a multiplication or normal cells because the cells are mutants (like the X-men). And not only one mutation but a lot of successive ones.
No known meal has this result in a lab.

Ah, si, si.
I've learned something both new and interesting today.....Thanks!
@dccomicsrule2011: You're welcome!
Food can be every bit as bad as smoking. There are a great many dangerous things that companies add to food, for the same purpose that cigarette companies add poisons to theirs. Sadly, people aren't motivated enough to educate themselves, which is ridiculous, because the information takes seconds to access. Ignorance at this point in time has become a choice.
@bullpr: With 10 dollars you could buy 3 meals worth of food. Chicken breast 2.99 a pound broccoli 2.00 a pound brown rice 2.00 32 oz. And 3 dollars to spare. Much healthier and much cheaper than 1 meal in McDonald's.

How do you eat the chicken breast and the broccoli if you are walking, working or other?
How easy is it to buy them?
To prepare them?
How fast would it take?
Don't rush your judgment. Obesity is a major issue and your approach is way to aggressive.
Education is key here, not the criticism and the sanctions.
The simple fact that you put at the same level Cigarette and Obesity show that you have no knowledge of the situation.
1) Bring it to work with you.
2) It's slightly harder than ordering at McDonald's because you have to search for the foods but it's still not that hard.
3) About 20 minutes
15 to grill the chicken
5 minutes to boil the brocoli and about 15 to boil the rice.
That's assuming that you're boiling the rice and brocoli at the same time. If you aren't then it will take you a few extra minutes.
4) I agree it's a major issue but I feel that's because people are scared to speak up and just say that your obesity is your own fault. As long as we allow people to think that obesity isn't their fault I don't think that we'll ever put a stop to it.
5) I didn't compare obesity to smoking, I compared eating unhealthy eating to smoking. I stand by that statement, they're both unhealthy habits that left unchecked can lead to serious illness, and both can be stopped. I agree it's hard to quit both but it needs to be done. Imagine if people frowned upon unhealthy eating the same way they frown on the consumption of tobacco.
1) Why aren't tobacco commercials allowed?
2) Why do many states charge high taxes on tobacco?
They're attempting to discourage the consumption of tobacco, why don't they do the same thing when it comes to unhealthy eating? Poor dietary habits kill more people than smoking according to a study conducted by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.
Why is it okay to look down upon smoking, but talking about someone's poor eating habits is considered taboo?
@gymgoer205: If nobody answers to you, I'll come back to this later tonight.
@bullpr: Stop Stop you're getting in the way of the "health"nazi's excuse to treat people with disdain. Stop your logic and sense.
:-)
@hudyman: Oh man I'm Hollywood now. Have we spoken before? I'm gymgoer205.
Eating badly is frowned upon to some extent, but we must eat to survive. People are obtaining SOME benefit from the food they're consuming even if they consume too much from time to time.
Smoking cigarettes doesn't do anything positive for ones health that I know of - and they're not required in any way/shape/form to live.
So while both are bad in the grand scheme of things - eating poorly is the lesser evil, in a sense.
1) But why ban tobacco commercials and not fast food commercials when the latter causes more deaths? I don't support tobacco commercials btw.
2) Why don't they do the same thing when it come to junk food? Less people would eat it and they would eat it less often because it would be more expensive.
3) I live in the same world as you fellow human. You'd be hard pressed to find someone making excuses for a smoker but many people make excuses for people with bad diets and shame people who publicly criticize them.
@thetruebarryallen: How is it the lesser of two evils when more people die from unhealthy eating than smoking?
@chillxpill: I think gmo food most definitely can and I think its already been proven to in rats.
@chillxpill: I think gmo food most definitely can and I think its already been proven to in rats.
No.
I know the senior author of this study (if you are referring to the one conducted in Europe a couple of years ago). The rats were a species that was able to develop tumors spontaneously and the number of animals studied was too low.
The fear about GMOs, when not rational like that, is not helping anyone.
Most of these GMOs have a just some additional genes associated with pesticide resistance. Please tell me the link between these genes in something that you are going to eat and digest and the risk of developing a cancer. How and when your own cells could be in contact with theses genes?
A magical genetic transfer??

I agree, I don't really get all of the panic about GMO. Sure, it won't be as nutritious as organic or whole foods, but it's not going to give you cancer (unless of course you drink the chemicals in a glass). Should GMOs be able to give humans cancer, then there would certainly be a case by now. Other chemical compounds in other products that have caused cancer showed up by this time of use.
@bullpr: wow. There is a reason why the us is practically the only nation in the world that allows for the growing and consumption of gmo foods and its not because they pose no threat to your health. I am not in the mood to start linking studies and whatnot but if you want to eat gmo food then go right ahead. I'm not in the mood to play educator tonight.
