Why is Robin called Robin?

I just realized I have no freaking idea. Dick Grayson's backstory has nothing at all to do with birds. Why the heck did he choose the name Robin?

In the comics: His mom called him that.

In real life: He's named after Robin Hood.

More interesting question : Why Wonder Woman is call Wonder Woman, why Aquaman is call Aquaman, why Martian Manhunter is call Martian Manhunter. The point is...it is just Superhero code of name. Please do not complicate such a simple things. Comics have many big problems that comics fans should discuss about

Robin's Robin because he's Robin.

Because he likes birds and his mum used to call him that.

Robin Hood was always one of his favorite heroes

All Star Batman summed it up best, he wanted to be Hood, Batman says

"Do you know what any thug with half a brain would do with that?" And pulls it down over his head "lose the hood, you're Robin"

Everybody is saying he is called Robin because of Dick's mom called him that, and this is true, but that is a more recent version of his Name's origin. Older versions have attributed it to Dick's favorite hero, Robin Hood.

Let's also not forget that Bats and Robins are both creatures that soar in the air. I'm sure that plays a role.

But I agree, it's just a name at the end of the day.

Because he has a small Robinet.

Ignoring story reasons I believe the creator name him that as something to do with Robin Hood. Not sure what though.

And he would have french origins! That would save him...
