Why is religion shoehorned into one thread but not politics?

Anyone want to guess why? Or maybe a mod would like to tell us why?

Religion is a lot more personal, and usually causes more flaming than politics.

You notice alot of parliament(non- funkadelic) threads here?

Religion is alot more personal? says who?

Religion causes more flame wars? Is that a fact?

I think this is a pretty weak explanation. Is this "THE" explanation or just your thoughts on it?

The one big difference between politics and religion is that politics are always in motion. Religion is what it is mostly unless someone like Pope Francis changes long held church stances.

@cuddlebear: I've yet to see a political thread cause as many flames as a religious one.

Also religion is much more personal and important to most people.

I'm not sure if it's an official policy that religion has to be in one thread or if it's just encouraged, but if it is an official policy, I dislike it.

Yesterday, I came across a thread where someone raised an interesting question about whether or not you would convert to a religion if the options were covert, die or go into exile. I thought it was interesting, and it spurred a good and flame free discussion. More importantly, this worthwhile conversation would have been buried in no time if it had been on the Religion page because there is no OP to keep things on point; 10 posts down the line, nobody would have seen it.

I respect ComicVine's goal of keeping flames from getting out of hand, but I would prefer targeting rude people instead of eliminating whole topics. It's hard to learn civility when contentious subjects are marginalized.

plenty of political flame wars... and also saying "religion is much more personal and important to most people" does not make it a fact. it really isn't

You are not going to stop the flames no matter what they subject. Its why i find the targeting of religion topic and not politcal topics questionable. The rest of what you said... well you have my vote for CV Off-Topic President *salute*

I don't know, it doesnt make sense to me. Religion is just as broad as politics IMO. Anytime someone makes a religion thread people say that there is already a religion thread for that, but how many people really go there often? And it's not at all focused on just one thing, like a different religious thread might be. Its really just a cluster on nonrelated stuff and is no good for discussing a certain topic in depth. There isn't just one Batman thread or one Spiderman thread.

I don't know... Id say a persons politics can be personal just as a persons religion can.

I mean I am not religious but some of my views that would be considered political are personal for me.

Well....the key may lie in the fact that religion influences politics. Most people would rather go straight to the root issues than beat around the bush.

Religion though personal always tends to hold a higher regard for people when it comes to the most important things in their lives. Most people don't care about politics if it doesn't affect them. On the other hand, many people that claim to not care about religion discuss it more than anything else.

I think religion covers faith and belief. Politics covers belief and idealism. There is overlap but it is two different topics.

As a rule, I personally don't judge faith and I encourage idealism.

It's not the intensity of the flame wars that matters, it's the probability. Religion threads are more likely to trigger flame wars than politics threads.

Few people come to CV to discuss politics, meanwhile everyone on the internet have a say on religion. Furthermore, few people have a stance on politics while others, especially the younger viners, call it boring. If you look up a politics thread, there are always common names posting, most of them with 1-10k posts and are actually mature enough. But try looking up a religion thread, it's a troll/flamer magnet and any mature viner knows how stupid arguing about religion in the internet. It will continue to attract new users.
