I don't know maybe its the fact that you can barely tell most pro wrestlers apart now days. Out of all of them there are maybe 5 or 6 that debuted in the last 10 years that stick out from the crowd and Randy Orton is pretty much the prototype version of the rest of the mass of forgettable dudes.

His character has always been the same, from being the Legend Killer, to becoming that psycho persona he had. I still found him entertaining back when I used to watch wrestling all the time. I liked his rivalry with the McMahon's.

They try to make him all PG and they make him a good guy, when he's better off playing the villain.

I blame the death of Kayfabe for the current state of wrestling. Yes, most of us knew it wasn't real but kayfabe made it more fun.

I liked him when he was Legend Killer. He was actually charismatic and wouldn't mind being silly.

Now he's boring with his over the top intense "Viper" persona.

The good old days.

The problem became that "people" hates gimmicks and trash talk any wrestler that has one.

It gets worst if they have a in ring persona and work the matches in the right way.

By letting this in ring persona tell a story inside the ring.

@deathpoolthet1000: I get the hate for one note gimmicks like the Boogey Man but their used to be plenty of guys with subtle and adaptable gimmicks like the Rock or Shawn Michaels. Pro Wrestlers have to be more than just the same guy in different tights.

The problem is that what we got is an evolution from that, everybody is trying to be a Shawn Michaels or The Rock, but tons of people will never be this, they dont have the skills, every time they try to build this type character it backfires.

Some people even hated CM Punk for the fact they saw him as a gimmick, even when is pretty obvious he was being himself, just bigger and badder.

Some people will work with over the top gimmicks like Goldust, Kane or The Undertaker.

Damien Sandow is a great example of how this making everybody The Rock failed, he work with over the top gimmicks.

Heath Slater is never going to be Shawn Michaels.

Everybody should watch Lucha Underground

I do, but no one wants to leave the WWE bubble.

Besides it point how gimmicks and tons of "outdated" ideas of wrestling work, besides to show the WWE is actually more outdated now that it was in the 80s and 90s.

He was cool in the Ruthless Aggression era and part of the way into the PG era.

I blame it on the current state of WWE tbh. They've ruined characters who used to be great... Kane comes to mind instantly. In addition to that, none of their newer talents stand out to me. Most of them are lames with bland and uninteresting gimmicks, and none of them have the same kind of electrifying stage presence as the superstars from earlier times.

I mean, how i could say it, i dont mean to be Shawn Micheals as Shawn Micheals, but as a type of wrestler/character.

Edge was Edge, CM Punk was CM Punk they could pull this that Shawn Micheals and The Rock could, to be this type of wrestler/character.

What so ever, not everybody will go this way, some people are like Shane Helms, they need to be The Hurricane.

How you know that?

The WWE scripts the promos, script the matches and tell them everything they have to do, if they go out of the script they get punished.

I think it has more to do with the fact that he is exactly the same no matter if he is face or heel, 10 years ago or now.

I somewhat agree, but I think that's not going to be the case for long.

Take a guy like Neville, Owens, Reigns, Rollins, Ambrose, Kalisto, on the main roster. Then guys in NXT like Finn, Zayn, The Vaudevillains, etc. and I think, (if left to their own devices,) we'd be in for a pretty colorful and diverse roster. Not even including the Divas, who have their own standouts.

As for Orton, I blame it simply on longevity. Today's superstars have lasted far longer as active, in-ring competitors than previous stars if I remember correctly. How long did Austin and Rock last? Compared to Hogan, who honestly had less to do in his time because he only had to really work in Japan, didn't compete night after night, wasn't even seen nearly as much because of the way television has evolved, and did far less dangerous moves. (Makes one wonder these days how he's so banged up.) Rock left at the peak of his popularity for Hollywood and Austin didn't last terribly long either. Cena and Orton, among others have been at this for a decade and even with their injuries still perform pretty well and are still talented, save for them being overexposed.

You said the state and they ruined older characters.

Then said that the new talents dont stand out, but never connected that one with the WWE creatives.

But yeah i got what you mean.

@scouterv: Hogan and Austin both had careers that last quite a bit longer than a decade. Austin had been wrestling at least 5 or 6 years before he even came to the WWE and he was around for a couple years before he really took off. He had at least another 5 after he became huge. Hogan wrestled regularly from the late 70s into the mid 90s.

I think what he missed here, is that Steve Austin wasnt Stone Cold for long and Hulk Hogan became Hollywood.

They evolved with the times and with their needs.

Stone Cold happened because Austin got hurt.
