Why is Detroit such a hellhole?

Seriously, they were having legit wars last summer over water supplies and even going so far as to hire mercenaries.

Then you have old black men selling raccoon meat out his car, claiming that it is a Southern delicacy. Around Christmas, I hear he even takes holiday orders.

Detroit was way too tied to the auto industry. When the auto industry started shifting jobs away from Detroit, the economy went down the toilet. Same thing happened to Gary, Indiana, but with steel.

When you have a weak economy, you have a weak municipal tax revenue. Therefore, public services go down the toilet too.

Because the Blackhawks as of the last 6 years have been as prestigious as it can get, especially if they win this year they'll be the 2nd team since Gretzkys Oilers to win the cup 3 times in 6 years.

IIRC, it's because it's corrupt and the state it is in, doesn't get help from other states, because the other states don't have to help other states, due to the fact that when USA was made into an independent country, they agreed that the differet states don't have to help each other. They can, but they don't, it's not an obligation. That, and also the fact that they don't even have a police force in Detroit, IIRC; which leades into a lot of people being able to do whatever the heck they want. I mean, you can literally go and stab someone without anyone stopping you, except for other people, but my point is that detroit doesn't have a police force, which leads into a lot of chaos.

@gjgp27: Because thousands of auto workers with thick arms and crowbars were displaced to make stupid little compacts overseas, and some decided that crime was a better recourse than retraining and jumping into a new career in their mid-30s or 40s.

New Orleans has since recovered from Katrina. So, you'd definitely be better off there than in Detriot.

No, I've never been. But, from what I've read, the population is growing (has 1.2 million) and that economy there as weathered the recession. I was under the impression that they recovered, but they still may be going through that process.

But, if I'm wrong, please correct me.

@static_shock: I think certain parts have recovered from Katrina(most notably the Bourbon st area and some other touristy parts) but large parts are still rebuilding and have the highest violent crime rate in the us by far. My parents went there like last year and enjoyed it but there are large sections you wouldn't want to visit and especially after sunset.

We have our problems but really who doesn't and we have a ways to go but things have been turning around. Were out of bankruptcy, have a Mayor that is way better then the last criminal elected and downtown is real nice.

We deserve some allot of the jokes thrown at us, but if you haven't at least been to the state or city and just want to take jabs us then you can STFU!!
