Why doesn't Great Britain (United Kingdom) use the Euro currency?
" @texasdeathmatch: so they do it cause they believe a rediculously complicated system is easier than one that only really requires you to be able to multiply by 10 "haha yeah, basically
We dont use the Euro since its weaker than our currency, so would effectivley be of no benefit to use it And we want to keep our own currency well most of us do anyways.
I agree with that. Also I believe that euro was a wrong move. I understand their thinking but they should have thought more how each country's economy would react to it. Not all economies are the same." @ComicMan24 said:
" @lazystudent: If you ask me, you did the right thing to keep the British Pound. I think that Europe wasn't ready for the euro yet. "The EU is expanding way too quickly in my opinion. "
Yes because the Euro is so strong just now .... Sorry I meant to finish there, I hit return and the next thing I know my post was up 0_O" Because they are smart. "
Basically, back when there were debates over this in 1997 that the UK would only adopt the Euro if five economic tests were passed, and only four of them have been. According to Wikipedia:
1. Are business cycles and economic structures compatible so that we and others could live comfortably with euro interest rates on a permanent basis?
2. If problems emerge is there sufficient flexibility to deal with them?
3. Would joining EMU create better conditions for firms making long-term decisions to invest in Britain?
4. What impact would entry into EMU have on the competitive position of the UK's financial services industry, particularly the City's wholesale markets?
5. In summary, will joining EMU promote higher growth, stability and a lasting increase in jobs?
So they claim that the second one hasn't been met, and the last three basically depend on that second one being fulfilled. Other than that there's actually an awful lot of arguments for the Euro, people here are just stubborn. I like the EU, I think it's been extremely beneficial to Europe as a whole and I see no reason why the Euro shouldn't be introduced in the UK.
The Euro is going down hill thanks to countries that weren't ready to be accepted into the European Union (EX: Greece).
The Latvian Lat is more valuable than the pound. I only know that because I passed through Riga recently.
