Why does my text document look like this?

Looks like you are trying to open a file that doesn't support .txt, what are you opening if I may ask?

Also some of those characters look chinese, have you added a locale recently? That can mess with certain text documents.

does this happen when you type on a empty / new text file?

@elderskaar: then it's exactly like what bruxae said you are reading a file which the software doesn't support.

Most of the time all valuable data, like game data, are encrypted so it can't be read no matter what software you use without decrypting it first.
