I've noticed this pattern has been going on for a few years.
Fair Matches: 6-10 posts.
Spite threads: 20-50 or more Posts.
What is up with that?

It makes them feel as if they know something. Not to mention it's pretty comfortable to point out how "obviously" the spite is. Whereas in a thread with a good matchup some users aren't exactly confident who would be able to win, and don't want to look bad by being wrong.
At least that's my take on it.

This is accurate - I've actually been hesitant to pick a side in a debate because I don't know enough about one of the characters, while being really knowledgeable about the other.
It's just not fun to argue a side & have everyone bash you for being wrong.
@thetruebarryallen: Lol yep happens to me, I've been able to bluff my way out of some situations though haha.
Because it's funny watching people actually argue that Batman with prep has a chance of defeating the Living Tribunal.
Same reasons flame and troll threads get more hits than legit threads:
1. People like to think they're funny (myself included) and post GIFS and pics that insult the thread and the OP
2. It rustles more jimmies, thus it gets a reaction out of people more.
3. People like to complain and insult more than compliment and converse, it's just how the internet works.
4. It requires less thought to say 'spite" or post the aforementioned GIFS than to actually think logically on a fair battle and post feats/scans/arguments to back it up.

BOOM. Exactly this.
On a fair match people are scared they could be wrong so they're more hesitant to post.
Explains a lot.

Nailed it.
The reason is not that hard to get once you think about it. I actually try to have fun in most battle threads I post in, fair or unfair.
Cause people like to make idiots/fanboys/trolls who still vote for the guy who gets slaughtered by the other feel stupid.
Because in fair matches you actually have to think about who would win while in spite matches it's pretty obvious who would win and would pull a dondave
People like to snark at stupid people.
This man gets it.
