Why do people drink?

One thing that has always baffled me is why people drink alcohol.  I just don't see the point.  In my entire life, I have never had even the slightest desire to drink.  In my opinion, drinking is a pointless activity which can only lead to detriment.  So, why do you drink?

My guess is because a lot of people think that in order to have fun, they must drink.

I drink maybe three to six times a year, and when I do, I'll spend all night nursing one bottle.  That said, it pretty much is a pointless activity that can only lead to detriment - besides, I like my liver WAY too much to drink anymore than I already do

I don't Drink cause I'm16 and most of the people drinks because they want to!

I drink because it helps me loosen up. It's relaxing now and then to just sit back, crack open a beer and just chill out with your friends.  Hard liquor is fun sometimes, but I'll pass if it's a daily thing.  
 
To each his own, but I won't judge you if you drink. That's ok by my book.

It makes me feel like an adult.Now that i'm actually old enough to drink legally...I don't drink as much

People drink because alcohol relaxes the body and releases one's inhibitions. Under the right circumstances, it can be liberating and fun, but people should only drink in moderation.  
P.S. 8 days till I can drink legally

I'm certainly in the same boat as you.  I have to much pride to take part in something so senseless   and blatantly harmful.

I do not generally reprimand others for it, although I have made the suggestion not to do so. I have been around others as they have been drinking and smoking. I do make it clear though that I do not want it.  "

I can't stand to be around people when they are drinking or smoking.  Besides being a tad anti-social, this would be the main reason I never go to parties. "

I was a social drinker, never got drunk though, just a few drinks here and there with friends. Until my brother had an accident which involved alcohol and drugs so I quit drinking. Simple as that.

Drinking is not a bad thing. It's the people that abuse it that make it look so bad. I prob drink once a week. It is usually a get together with my good friends while playing cards or just chilling.  
 
The nice thing about drinking is how relaxed and open you become. I have let out a lot of stress through drinking and talking with my really good friends. However drinking too much can have the opposite effect. You start to say things you may regret.  
 
I like to drink to the point of getting a nice buzz and that's about it. Getting drunk is stupid, not drinking

Because it's fun...simple as that

Everyone can tell you 12 pages worth of opinions but the best way to answer this thread is to TRY IT! Haha you'll see why after 3 beers. :D

honestly...I like the taste of a good beer....lately I've been getting into microbrews and loving them....I also like a nice glass of scotch occasionally

I don't dirnk either because I too don't see the need in it. I can have fun and relax without it, but if others want to drink, that's there business not mine. People have the right to destroy their liver all they want to. It's theirs, right? ;-)

Maybe to just get a little Tipsy :P
