Especially in the Midwest.
Why do Catholics have fish frys?
I was raised Catholic and I've never heard of this stereotype before. I spent half my life in CT and the other in SC, so maybe that's why.
Once upon a time, it was against the rules of the church to eat meat on certain days (except for fish). So people would eat fish on those days instead.
Fun fact: beavers were considered to be fish. Insert oral sex joke here.
Thanks Obama.

As was swans too (though I can't make any lewd jokes about that, sadly :( )
I'm from a catholic family and I've never heard this fish fries but I do know of Fish frys! Every Friday during llent we would eat fish and abstain from meat. Friday Fish frys became popular because of this….where I'm local schools, churches, and businesses would have bif fish frys; fried catfish, crawfish, and games. It's a great time and another reason why atheists can go away for ever.

What?
@mysticmedivh: We got a problem?
@bsaa: lol you say anything original yo?
I was born and raised Catholic in the heart of the Midwest, Chicago, and have never eaten any type of seafood my entire life.
We don't eat any meat on Fridays during Lent, and I know fish is allowed to be eaten, but my family never had it. I guess most Catholics do [eat fish] tho just because they get to cheat the system :/
*shrugs*
I dunno
@bsaa: @mysticmedivh: @raffels: This is starting to go on the path every religion thread takes... A crusade that leaves in it's supreme wake nothing but destruction and turmoil...
Children, it's time to get in the bunker, and remember those yellow costumes I showed you? Put those on; we'll be having a fun time in that metal playhouse in the backyard while this *cough*Cold War*cough* storm rolls over, okay kids?
@The_Deathstroker: It's not cheating the system…its always be like this with eating fish when the tradition started
@raffels: I know it has, but eating meat when your not suppose to eat meat and just say it's not meat is cheating the system. It's not like fish is a plant.
@The_Deathstroker: I see what your saying about fish but if ypu remember your sunday school teaching…. It's not a scientific analysis of what meat is when it was started….Meat use to be a luxurious rich man's food because of how hard it use to be to get enough to eat. Fish was a boring easy food any common man could catch. Also he dictionary defines flesh as: the muscle and fat of an animal, typically excluding fish and sometimes fowl.
@raffels: Meh. IMO fish is meat and eating meat when you shouldn't because you don't label it meat just seems like cheating.
We'll have to agree to disagree
@The_Deathstroker: I understand what you're saying but did your church ever do Friday Fish frys?
@raffels: Nope. There is five Catholic Churches in my neighborhood and I don't know a single one that did.
@mandarinestro: My old pastor is from the Phillipines I should ask him but I know he loves fish frys here
@mandarinestro: Friday night curry fests?
We have a different culture than the Phillipinos. Maybe because their country was under Spanish rule for so long while the Portuguese who colonized my country eventually lost most territory to the Dutch, who spreaded Protestantism. Guess where I live?
Athiest you are forced to love and forgive me…….oops never mind you're not.
@mandarinestro: I would say Macau! But that's probably wrong. I'm not Filipino by the way but where I'm from it was under Spanish rule and French Rule….Where am I from?
@rev_sulphur: That too
@bsaa: Pretty sure it's a tradition dating from early Christian times, where fish was common but other meats were more expensive.
Also, lots of the Apostles were fishermen, and fish is a common symbol throughout the Gospels, so it's partly from that too
If I remember correctly it gets a pass because it's what they ate at the last supper.
