Why are so many films grossing over a billion dollars now a days?
Last year it was Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Avengers, and the before that it was Harry Potter, Transformers 3 and Pirates Of the Caribbean.
Now their are 14 movies with over a billion dollar gross, and i am sure the Hobbits on its way to becoming number 15.
Any ideas why so many people are flocking to the theaters lately?
@CaioTrubat: No its quite the opposite , its just a mystery to me, why movies are grossing so much money now.a days.

Because ticket prices are higher than ever before, 3D and IMAX are helping a bit too

And adjusting for inflation, there are a bunch of movies that hit 1 Bil.

@Nefarious: Almost every movie to come from the 80s was interesting, most for the wrong reasons but still interesting
@jumpstart55: Ticket prices and all the movies you named had good trailer, famous characters, and were good films.
@Nefarious: It starts out as a movie about a weasely cable exec and seems like that's what its gonna be about that for about the first 15 minutes then I guess Cronenberg's acid kicks in and you just gotta ride out the insanity
I think they are selling more internationally now-a-days which makes the Billion mark easier to achieve. Plus this includes DVD and Blu-ray sales I believe, which are selling well domestically and internationally as well.
@Nefarious: If you watch it you may be creeped out by your TV for a while afterward, I was for about 2 days.

Yea but thing is most of those films are separated by decades or so, but lately movies are practically grossing a billion dollars or really close to a billion dollars every year. Since 2010 movies have been grossing over a billion dollars at a rate of 2 or more movies a year.
@jumpstart55: With the recent movies, it probably has a lot to with the movies themselves. Batman, James Bond, Avengers, Harry Potter, these are released all over the world. Batman, Avengers and Bond have all been around for 50+ years. The movies rating has a lot to do with it. The 80's and 90's had a lot of R rated movies where as now most are PG-13 which draws in more people.

Oh yea, that makes a lot sense. Thanks
@jumpstart55: It's because of inflation.

It is bad. Remember, 12 years ago, movie tickets used to cost below $3. Popcorn and a softdrink were shy away of $1.50 to $2.00. If you go to a movie today, tickets are $11 and $15 using iMax and 3D. A small popcorn and softdrink exceeds over $6 each. Ever wonder why BluRay cost so much despite that manufactures spend $0.01 producing those disc? You can buy a BluRay movie for $1 and they can still make a profit out of it, but no, they cost you $24 up to $59 and over $100 on special box set editions. When you connect the dots, you will see that films are not really grossing over a billion and it being a strong positive value. The fact is that the dollar value is getting worst which leads all the prices of things jumping up.
If movie tickets were $15 each and $6 per every small popcorn and softdrink in 1999, the films back then would be grossing over a billion dollars too.

I've always said that they should account for amount of tickets sold. For the record, TDKR actually sold more tickets - Avengers grossed more because, unlike TDKR, it was in 3D. I'm not being bias here as to which movie is better (I'm a DC fan, but I preferred the Avengers); I just think that it's more fair. If people went by that system, a lot of old movies would still be in the top 10.
