Spartan

& deadliest warrior did this experiment I think

#2 Posted by kasino (1785 posts) - - Show Bio

yea they did the shield was the clear edge.

apparently they didn't use shields in feudal Japan. I would have went with samurai. Better armor. They're based around archery foremost so keeping the spartans at bay will be primary. Close range they are extraordinary swordsmen but I could understand how they could lose.

I just see a barely protected warrior having to get through a marksmen then survive their sword skills.

Samurai were way more skilled swordsmen and bronze armor can't stand steel katana.

Lmao I remember Deadliest warrior did Spartan vs Ninja and when they showed the battle the Spartan is walking around and the ninja is sneaking up behind him, then right as the ninja is closing in for an attack, he lets out a huge battle cry/yell...The warrior known for being silent and sneaky, sneaks up behind the Spartan and starts yelling, letting the Spartan know he is there...that pissed me off.

Spartans actually wore quite a bit of armor, not like that poor "look at my abs" 300 movie lol.

Spartans are known for their shield formations and group fighting dynamics.

In 1v1, a samurai would win. They are more trained towards individualized fighting.

If this was an army vs army scenario, then I would say the Spartan's phalanx would prove hard to break.

Spartan's advantages: shield, toughness

Samurai's advantages: steel sword, training, armor

Overall the Samurai will win because of the excellent steel sword and the skill to use it. The Spartan spear and short sword will be at a big disadvantage. Those are good weapons for massed battles, but not necessarily for a 1-on-1 against such a skilled and armored/armed opponent.

Samurai wins.

So much wrongness in this thread, Samurai were not masters at One-Vs-One combat, they fought in armies of 1000s more often than they fought in One-Vs-One, their swords are unable to cut Bronze Armor the spartans wear, yet the Spartan weaponry is capable of cutting the Samurai's. I'll give a detailed breakdown soon, but the Spartan wins in a one-vs-one.

The Samurai will destroy the Spartan, are you guys serious? 3rd century BC weapon technology & tactics vs 16/17th century AD weapon technology & tactics, come on how is the (naked) Spartan going to win? The katana will cut whatever weapon he has in half with one strike.

^This, thou. The armor they used was just too gangsta... leather & silk shirt = still stops the arrows from touching the skin.

Agree. Not because I am part Mongolian but because you know, they were merciless Guerrilla fighters. But in a straight up fight, the Samurai has distinct advantages.

A Mongol would kick both their asses.

The Japanese turned back the Golden Horde of Kublia Khan twice. The Mongols succeeded based on the fear they created in everyone who heard of them, and the genius tactics of Ghengis Khan. But in a straight up fight, a single mongolian warrior isn't any more or less skilled than a samurai or a spartan.

#24 Posted by Peak (1018 posts) - - Show Bio

@dwightspitz: Katana can't cut through a bronze shield, plus it's got reinforced wood with metal, a katana would get stuck penetrating that with a single slice. No sword in the world can slice straight through (a slightly curved) shield.

Deadliest Warrior was f'd up. So many historical innaccuracies and screw ups. The one guy from the 3rd season there tried to claim he was a Green Beret and it turns out he was just a file clerk for the Green Berets.

In reality, The Samurai has the advantage of ranged weapons (steel tipped arrows) steel weaponry, and a more refined style of fighting. So if the Samurai can keep the Spartan at range and get a lucky shot in with the arrows, he has a chance.

Up close, its a toss up. The Spartan will be physically stronger, taller, have a longer reach, and has that great big bronze shield which can take quite a beating. The Samurai is a more technically skilled fighter, but he's being battered by a guy who has at least a foot and 100 pounds on him. I suspect if the Spartan is brutal enough, he can take the win.

In an army thing, the question comes down if the Samurais are clever enough to break a Phalanx, which has been done. The key for them would be to use light troops to hit the flanks with missiles, and use their cavalry in flanking moves. The Spartans would have to close fast and kill as many dudes as possible to survive. I believe a 1000 man Samurai army would defeat a 1000 man Spartan Phalanx.

That's because a rapier is thrusting weapon, not a slashing one. There's no question that a rapier is faster than either a longsword or a katana.

Rapier + shield against a katana is a really interesting fight.

I'm not sure what side I'd take on this but either way I think it's worth mentioning that a major typhoon did a pretty decent job of damaging the Mongol invasion before they even landed.

Spartan's shield isn't even an advantage because its made of wood faced with soft bronze.

Tempered steel has no problem with that.

also Naginata > Katana :p

The only reason the Mongols didn't raze Japan to the ground was because the Mongols were HORRIBLE at naval combat AND they were hit by a typhoon. I would say that they are far more skilled as they have reliable and powerful lamellar armor on top of fantastic ranged weapons skills. And it wasn't just Genghis my friend; Subutai, Tamerlane, Kublai, those guys crank out phenomenal military leaders.

Samurai in a singular duel. Spartans would win easily in an army-based fight, though. Samurai are more engineered towards solo fighting, and are markedly less efficient in large groups as the Spartans. However, the Samurai are more potent fighters on their own.
