As a swordsman, I could rant about this topic for hours. This has ruined many of my favorite anime and it needs to stop.

Anime always screws up with swords. I will say I don't hate all of them, but a lot of them do look stupid.
I'm okay with huge swords, but I hate oversized anime hair. Namely, I hate the hair of most of the main characters from the Yu-gi-oh franchise. Those be sum dum hairs.

@spitfirepanda: Sometimes I like oversized hair in anime.
Specifically, I like oversized hair in 80s anime.
It's really not an anime thing, it's prevalent in multiple forms of media.
Magik above is a good example.

Yeah, I agree.
@god_spawn: That's a new thing, until very very recently her soulsword was pretty much just a long sword.

You hate large swords probably because its so impractical in real life ?
Yes, that is my main reason.
This is what a swordsman should look like:
I'm waiting for the anime where the best weapon isn't a sword, but a mace or an axe! Specifically a mace though.
I like them because they just look straight up cool. Even though I do agree that they are unrealistic and impractical, this is anime we're talking about here, lots of things are unrealistic.
Although sometimes I do think more realistic looking swords look even cooler
For example: I think Ichigo's smaller Katana looking sword is cooler than his large and ridiculous looking meat cleaver (although I like this one too)

This is what a swordsman should look like:
If someone is much stronger then logically doesn't that then make it not impractical?
If they can throw a large sword around faster or a smaller sword just won't cut it then doesn't it make sense for the escalation?
I mean Lowlander swords in real life were absolutely massive, so is it such a stretch to say that large swords are impractical?
The large swords are awesome and most always have some special ability or are just there to make the character look stronger. If you should be ranting about anything, how about the overuse of fan service in most recent anime and how said fan service ruins the seriousness of the anime. Take HSD:Kenichi for example.
@racob7: Here, here! Final Fantasy games are to swordsmanship what Guitar Hero is to actually playing a guitar.
I do get that but these are regular people that are using these weapons, compared to fictional characters who are much, much stronger.
I do think there is a point where swords are ridiculous for someone's build regardless of strength (Cloud's Buster Sword and Sephiroth's Katana are prime examples).
Yeah it's unpractical but everytime I hear a description of Gut's Dragonslayer It's too awesome to deny.

Recent? Kenichi came out almost a decade ago.
more annoyed with the fact that a normal man with a normal steel sword from ancient japan can often slice large boulders clean in two in anime or slice steel bars walls other swords etc. how unrealistic that is bothers me so much.
@thatguywithheadphones: recent like popularity wise.
It's fiction, I don't mind it, nor do I ask for realism.

You're clearly just not doing it right, this is the bare minimum size of a sword you should be using if your a true swordsmen.
Anyways it actually makes a lot of sense for a fictional character to use an unrealistic sword. If you have the superhuman strength to casually swing around a massive sword wouldn't make more sense to do so as it provides far more range to the user and can cause more damage. You have to admit, it would be a bit silly for a class 100 character to be using a dager(assuming it doesn't have some special properties).

Yeah!!! that was the best 2D sword fight choreography I've seen yet back then.

Yep one of the best Japanese comics and animated features that have been released yet. Sadly its author is too busy playing Idolmaster. LMAO!!!

I'm waiting for anything where the best weapon isn't a sword..... Come on people switch up your melee weapons. I'm so bored with swords. Give me a polearm, or a warhammer, or anything except a god damn sword!
Big swords are cool but ridiculous absurd ones I can't really deal with. Like that Cloud dude from Final Fantasy 7 and that pic above me.
Shinra Soldiers are incredibly strong and agile, they swing those slabs of metal like paper.

Warhammers will rock any armor weilding opponent that is for sure. But light armored opponents will have the speed advantage.
