Who do you think is the best lyricist of all time in music?
Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin
Paul Mccartney and John Lennon of the Beatles
Don Henely and Glenn Frey of the Eagles
Who do you think is the greatest lyricist of all time?
"Maybe for Hip Hop music, but of all time?
So hard to say...I'll name one and then think of another.Tupac Amaru Shakur "
" @King Saturn said:well I was thinking about the Food actually not the musician..." @Caligula said:you can laugh but the man is good. "" Joey RamoneJohn LennonJohn FoggertyBelinda CarlisleMeat Loaf "ha ha... Meat Loaf "
" I don't think you can say definitively...it's arguable...but as a fan of Lennon I'd say him. "I agree with you that's why i named several. to say one is the best is near impossible to prove. but you can see a clear line between the top/middle/lower tier lyricists.
" Big L or Vinnie PazPaz is great but I honestly prefer Celph Titled. He kills it on every track he's on."
I have a few favorites
Stevie Nicks
Robin Peckford
Ben Gibbard
Tori Amos
Ray LaMontagne
all very talented writers
I could read their words without music and still enjoy them
Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam. Single most talented lyricist ever.
Bruce Springsteen. With songs like the My Hometown, Secret Garden, and My City of Ruins, it's no wonder they call him "the Boss".
Phil Anselmo from Pantera.
Chad Gray from Mudvayne. Phil and Chad are both seriously underrated because of their musical genre. Don't let the screaming and headbanging fool you. These men are poets.
Robert Smith from the Cure. Great lyricist, but much like Bob Dylan, his songs are usually better when performed by someone else.
Max Beemis from Say Anything
Matt Skiba from Alkaline Trio.
Jesse Lacey from Brand New. With the last three, when you're lumped in as an "Emo" or "indie/punk" band, you really need that much more talent to stand out in an overglutted market of groups who think that angst and emotion are just tools to sell records.
Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Some of the most beautiful, heartwrenching music you will ever hear.
I'd also argue that George Harrison is the Beatles greatest lyricist. He may not have been as prolific, but the songs he wrote were more poetic, touching, and evocative. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something (in the Way She Moves)" are superior to anything by Lennon/McCartney IMO.
" Tupac ShakurI'm with ya on Hetfield. The stuff on Master of Puppets is the pure, unadulterated essence of genius. And even outside of Puppets, songs like Four Horsemen, Ride the Lightning, Fade to Black, Blackened, and Frayed Ends of Sanity should put him a list among the best. The only problem with Metallica is the lack of anything decent since the Black Album.James Hetfield *ducks*"
" James Hetfield Zach De La Rocha "ZACH DE LA ROCHA AWWWW CHEAA!!!!
Oh yeah, maybe not the greatest, but one of my favorite, Cee-Lo Green. Loved St. Elsewhere. What about the lead singer of Lynard Skynard?
