What #notallmen got wrong and the point #YesAllWomen was trying to make.

After Elliot Rodger's murder spree in Isla Vista, last May a hashtag appeared at Twitter-#notallmen, announcing what is strictly speaking true- not all men are rapists, abusers or murderers of women,and that men resented the implcit mass defamation of their sex(allegedly not just by feminists but by women in general)_ only to be followed by a rival tag# Yes AllWomen.

Now as I have already noted, strictly speaking#notallmen is quite correct, but I think (upon further reflection) the point #YesAllWomen was making is also true, to quote Anglo Irish philosopher Edmund Burke(and father of modern day conservatism)- "evil flourishes when otherwise good men-(and presumably women incidentally).- do nothing.

Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel makes the same point- what hurts the oppressed is not so much the cruelty of the oppressor but the silence of the indifferent onlooker- the one who"just doesn't think he should get involved!"

Now that several hundred celebrities(all female) have had nude photos of them stolen from iCloud and posted on the Internet( by presumably male hackers and hetero ones at that), true most men will not look at those photos( I definitely WON'T- any more than I would look at child porn or images of beheadings of "infidels" by ISIS and their ilk), but they/we won't condemn too much those of us who DO/WILL look.

Sex abuse in Rotherham, slipping drugs into a teenage girl's drink and then not only raping her en masse whilst unconscious and then photographing her and posting her photos on social media sites( see Twitter hashtags# IamJada, #jadaphotos and #JusticeforJada)) ridiculing her as a "hoe"(whore) and now the ultimate invasion of privacy for these hapless ladies, evil really DOES flourish when otherwise good men simply look the other way!

Not sure what #yesallwomen means in the OP. But apparently the guy who hacked celebs nudes before was sentences to ten years so some people seem to care. But for the most part, guys like seeing nudes actresses so it makes sense the majority don't care. They are definitely those that do though. Honestly, I liked the pics very much of course, but at the same time its not OK to have someone leak your personal pictures online.

I swear these are consistently the most terrible threads on Off-Topic, and that is saying something.

Depending on how one defines feminism I think that most posters here agree with feminism as long as they can get past their own misplaced feelings of being attacked by feminism.

These picture leaks happen to everyone, from politicians like the aptly named Anthony Weiner, to celebrities like the batch who got pictures leaked today. If you store pictures online/send nude pictures to someone, you have to realize there is a chance they can get leaked. Common sense approach is to just not take the pictures in the first place, but of course people don't seem to have much common sense so this sort of stuff will doubtless keep happening.

First things first- YES, men can suffer from sexism as well as women- but it disproportionately hits women harder than men- just as racism hits blacks and other people of colour harder than whites( see Laura Bates's "Everyday Sexism", Simon and Schuster, 2014). There are lots of things on the Web that I have never or would even want to see- not just porn(kiddie or otherwise), but bestiality, blasphemous, white supremacist sites like Stormfront, images of "infidels" being beheaded by jihadists and other frankly repulsive. Whilst I may SUPPORT people's rights to see such things if they so so desire, I would NOT want to see such things myself. Apropos of Jada, what kind of depraved mind can seriously justify slipping a "roofie"

(Rohypnol or other date rape drug) into an unsuspecting teenage girl's drinking, then nraping her whilst uncosncious and then gleefully posting the images on social networking sites with callous comments about her being a "snitch" or a"hoe"???

Is it really asking too much of a society that rightly decries racism(including anti-Semitism), homophobia and Islamophobia to treat sexism as we would any other prejudice?

I looked at all the nudes I could find, multiple times. I even saved a select few photos onto my phone, and I know of multiple other users who did too.

My point is that feminism is/should be "equalism" in reality and most men agree with this. What they don't agree with, and the point where they get defensive is when they feel personally attacked by feminists who over-generalize about all men being animals(etc), or push a clearly female dominant platform.

The reason the term isn't equalist is because the battle against negative social gender institutions was first taken up by women. To me, changing the title of the movement or ideology would be like retroactively renaming Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" to "A Vindication of the Rights of Human." An action that would just be silly.

Another way to think about it is equating it to heterosexuals that demand a straight pride parade or white people demanding a history month.

As for female dominance, feminism isn't about that. People that make it about that are the equivalent of members of the Westboro Baptist church. Sure, they call themselves Christian, but the general Christian population doesn't consider them Christian or at least don't identify with them.

@paracelsus: No, because the actions that you listed are condemned and generally prosecuted, the exception being the nude thing because no one really cares, but rape not only happens to both sexes but is specifically socially despised by most cultures. It doesn't matter what pseudo-intelligent quote you use or what 'deep thought' you have. Generalizing an entire sex is silly and pretty much guarantees that no one takes you seriously.

Actually I tend to regard myself as a humanist(albeit a religious one) who thinks that human beings have a right to develop their full God given potential(irrespective of religious affiliation, ethnic origins or gender).
