I've decided that I want to become a film citric. Obviously, I have to see a lot of films from every single movie genre. The thing is, for some of these genres I don't know what movie's I should be seeing and for the genres I do, I need to see much more.

Suggest the best film(s) I should see for each genre (or the genre's that you can help me out on)

Horror- Halloween 1978 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 Night of The Living Dead. Dawn of The Dead. Day of The Dead. (All originals not the remakes) Friday the 13th series parts 1 to 4. A Nightmare on Elm Street parts 1 to 4,certainly parts 1 and 3 as they are the best. Hellraiser, Hellraiser 2. Creepshow 1982. Trick R Treat. Scream. 28 Days Later. Cannibal Holocaust. The Shining. Child's Play. The Fly (1986). Candyman. Evil Dead (original) Evil Dead recent one.

Sci Fi- Star Wars original trilogy. Predator, Predator 2 Predators. Alien, Aliens. Robocop. Terminator, Terminator 2. District 9. Matrix (might as well watch all three) Escape From New York. They Live.

Comedy. . Evil Dead 2 Army of Darkness. Re Animator. Bride of Re Animator. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. (All are horror comedies but don't really elicit negative emotion like horror does so they are a blend of both)

Thriller- Hannibal. Silence of The Lambs. Red Dragon. Pulp Fiction. Reservoir Dogs. S7ven/Seven. Die Hard. Fight Club.

I could list more but I am sure that is enough to keep you occupied for a bit :)

You'd likely benefit most from focusing on one genre at a time. I know you're likely not looking to specialize in reviewing only certain types of films, but there's a lot of movies out there, and each genre has it's own rules about style, execution, timing, etc.

Oh, and don't skimp on watching foreign films. Don't be afraid of the subtitles, man.

That is indeed the best line in the movie. But we also have this. And let's not forget this. And that isn't even getting into him shooting Murphy in the head.

Darn, yes... I forgot to put this on my list.

Seven Samurai

You really dont know squat about movies unless you've seen this. And while you're at it, you should see some films by Ingmar Bergman:

The Seventh Seal

Add these to the ones I put on my lists above.

Comedy: Naked Gun 33 1/2, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Kung Pow: Enter The Fist, BASEketball, Half-Baked, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Monty Pythons Holy Grail, Without a Paddle, National Lampoons Vacation movies

Horror: Don't know if you're one of those people who don't like the oldies, but any of the Hammer Horror Classics are great films, 13 Ghosts, The Thing (I prefer the 1980's version, Evil Dead, House of 1000 corpses, The Devils rejects, Black Friday, and Stephen Kings It

Romance: Not really my genre lol. But a good classic romance is Casablanca. Every good movie critic has to see it atleast once.

Also, you should come back and give your thoughts once you watch them. It'd be good practice if your goal is to eventually become a movie critic.

good idea! I'm a bit busy at the moment, but i'm gonna have a list put together maybe tomorrow. Have you had any experience with film studies or anything like that before? You seem to know a lot about this stuff.

I have no formal training in film studies, but it's a bit of a hobby. I love movies and movie making, and I love watching, discussing, and analyzing movies from all periods back to the silent era.

BTW talking about movie reviewing (and you might already be familiar w/ these), I recommend the RedLetterMedia Star Wars Prequel reviews if you havent seen them. They're entertaining and really insightful into not just the SW Prequels, but also movie making in general.

Horror - Jacob's Ladder, House ('77).

Sci-fi - Fantastic Planet.

Drama - The Seventh Seal(Edit: Didn't see WillPayton mention this one but I second this film all the way, some of the best dialogue and striking imagery in a film I've ever seen), Rashomon, Enemy at the Gates.

Could only think of a few off the top of my head that hadn't already been mentioned.

There is also a series put out by Kino of Avant Garde cinema that is pretty interesting. I think there is four in total, but I can only speak of the first three having not seen the fourth. They are...

  • Avant Garde - Experimental Cinema of the 20's & 30's
  • Avant Garde 2 - Experimental Cinema 1928-1954
  • Avant Garde 3 - Experimental Cinema 1922-1954

Also the Criterion Collection does a good job of grabbing up really interesting foreign films.

Good luck with things!

No prob. Reviewing movies is fun. If I had enough time I'd start my own YouTube movie review channel. LOL... not that I think anyone would care, but just because it'd be fun. There's already a bunch out there and some are pretty good, but also some are crappy. Too many people on YT reviewing movies as fans instead of critical reviewers.

BTW, RedLetterMedia does a regular review on their website/channel called "Half in the Bag" which is pretty cool. The reviews are not as long as their epic Prequel ones, but they do them much more often and they're fun to watch.

I've also been watching the YT channel for AMC Theaters, which does regular video podcasts about movies, and it seems mostly sci-fi and comic book movies. You should check that out.
