Hey!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm writing my own comic that has an evil organisation it it? I wanted your opinion on what makes a scary villain.

Tell me what you think

What makes a scary villain? Killer clowns...

@Mediumflyer7: What makes a villain scary, or what makes a scary villain?

Being unexpected is the most important part of being a villain.

Look at Joker

Mysterious past, and some degree of logic to his motives will make your villain scary. Read Batman: R.I.P. and focus on dr. hurt.

@thespideyguy: Funny you say that. Batman R.I.P is an inspiration for my book! I agree with this!

I actually imagined the black glove over the court of the owls when you described your organization to me.

Probably someone whose plans and actions go beyond the psychological profile of what I am used to seeing in my comics. A villain who dares to play with the contours of my comfort zone.

A lot of creators think a scary villain has to be dark, satanic looking, bad attitude, skulls and cross bones, and all the shock value BS. But that is not scary. That is the opposite of scary. That is expected. If there is one thing that has scared humans of all walks of life is the unknown. We fear what we don't know, cause we don't know how to handle it or what to expect. A villain we know nothing about, what he is planning and what he is about to do.

And the biggest trick to make a scary villain isn't to try to scare your readers, but to scare the characters in your story. The scariest movies aren't the ones that make us jump but the ones that make us scared for the characters in them. The reader has feel and empathize with the characters emotion. In other words, keep them in suspense and don't be afraid to fully portray your characters in fear, and when I say characters I'm talking about the heroes, they guys that aren't supposed to be scared. No one is going to be afraid of a villain that not even the main star is afraid of.

@thespideyguy:

Still, its extremely unnerving. Instead of straight-up human, something that looks human, but not quite. It's the same unnerving you feel if you see pictures of aliens (the really good drawings. Not Mars Attacks funny designs.)

An example of Uncanny Valley for aliens is the real skull of the Star Child. Its human, but not human at the same time. Check it out:

It is unnerving. And what is a Starchild?

@thespideyguy:

It was an old skull found near an area with skulls deformed by ritual practice (the real life cone heads you could say). Most of the skull is missing, but what is known from the remains in the photo above is that the child had a brain half the size of a standard human, extremely narrow, large and shallow eyes and a teeny tiny nose.

Most experts claim it's fake or an unknown medical condition. But others think it was the bones of an alien/human hybrid.

I personally thought it was a hybrid, but now I'm objective. I don't agree in a medical condition though; that's an automatic cop out for geneticists too full of themselves to care about anything outside of their million dollar 401K.

This is an approximate illustration of the child as it was alive:

@Agent9149: Yep! This will be a great thing to keep in mind. I completely agree.

@DarkKnightRises: Agreed but its not for every book.

You can use a scary villian that seems nice in look wise , but atcually is crazy, mean and has no feelings to people.

Many people go for the joker because he is known for this and has appeared a lot recently in the batman comics.

Joker is know to of thought he was a factory work. Also he claims to have tried stand up comedy but did not work so tured to crime. Then fell into chemicals to look like what he is.

Because of this he has a good but dark sense of humor that he uses on other characters alot to harm them like putting knives to their necks or blowing things up.

Plus telling crazy storys or jokes that lead to death or a wild gooes chase for batman.

Overall the creater of the Joker thought that because many people have a fear of clowns even though they are good at keep kids happy that making him psychopathy, sickening and a person of anarchy and a basic crazed man of laughter it makes his gags a little bit more scary than other villians. This is because of how his brain works and his overall personality not strengh or skills like other characters go by. So try using personality structure and basic looks to decribe you scary villian, not how good their skills or stregth are to the hero. To give you an idea of of the Joker, he was crazed enough in the new 52 comics to get his face cut off by another inmate at the Asylum.

A lover of chaos with a lack of empathy. Basically The Joker :)

Want to make a scary villain. make him pure evil, make sure that he is ruthless, that the only feeling that he shows to bringing pain is enjoyment and take pride in his job. Like the Joker or Dr. Hurt. That he kills because he loves to hate, that his pleasure is pain. and he doesn't hold back on anything or anyone. make him unpredictible and genius. and If you want to make him thougher give him powers or money. and he doesn't really have to look like a villain, he can look like a hero.

If you need more inspiration read: American Psycho (you can also watch the movie), any book with Joker or Dr. Hurt, Irredeemable, and Bedlam.

Think of a sadistic, sick bastard who digs in to all the common fears of fan, but also the not so common ones as well. Pure evil. Pure fear. That's what I certainly look for.

A villain that is a genius.

Someone who operates on an entirely alien scale of logic.

#32 Posted by Oscuro (723 posts) - - Show Bio

a character who has a certain rationale behind their actions that makes you feel that what they do can be justified even if its socially or morally unacceptable. or a character that embodies your repressed urges to do very bad things when someone pisses you off.

Having legions of henchmen with no intelligence to do your bidding, as well as fashionable shoes, a big scary cape, hidden buttons that send you into crocodile infested pits, a masters degree and a p.h.d, evil name like Dr. Bad. Also a love of cats.

Power.

The seeming impossibility of gaining any type of advantage over him/her should leave the protagonist and the reader with feelings of hopelessness.

" Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is? Insanity is doing the exact... same f*cking thing... over and over again, expecting... sh*t to change. That... is crazy; but the first time somebody told me that...I dunno, I thought they were bullsh*tting me, so boom - I shot him. The thing is, okay... He was right. And then I started seeing: everywhere I looked, everywhere I looked, all these f*cking pricks, everywhere I looked, doing the exact same f*cking thing... over and over and over and over again thinking: "This time, it's gonna be different; no, no, no, no, no, please... This time it's gonna be different." ...I am sorry, I don't like the way- [Punches crate aside violently, his agitation towards Jason Brody is visibly growing] -you are looking at me... Okay, do you have a f*cking problem in your head? Do you think I am bullsh*tting you? Do you think I am lying? F*ck you! Okay? F*CK. YOU! It's okay, man. I'm gonna chill, hermano. I'm gonna chill... The thing is... alright, the thing is: I killed you once already... and it's not like I am f*cking crazy. It's okay... It's like water under the bridge. Did I ever tell you the definition... of insanity?"

That is a villain!
