What is a hipster ?

It's a term I have heard so many times. With so many different definitions. I am not interested in people just being insulting. I really want to know what defines a hipster. It's even a term used to describe me because of my music and video game love. I mainly listen to Black Metal which I have been listening to since I was 14 I am now 31. I often talk about the Sega Megadrive games with older friends. This term is something that just goes way over my head. I just think it's just used as a negative word for insulting people as I have never heard of anyone self identify as a hipster.

Hipsters used the word hipster before it was insulting.

Recently a guy on another board called 4chan hipster, so I really have no Idea what this word really means.

Someone who tries to be "different" than everyone else to be cool and unique. They wear clothes that were once outta style, wear glasses, just cause, and hate all things mainstream.

This is what a hipster is in a nutshell really. Hating popular things for the sake of trying to get attention and to be different from the "plebs" is the core of hipster identity.

Hippies Hipsters I see no difference between them.

Funny thing is that now that's exactly what's considered cool and in.

A d-bag with a holier than thou attitude that hates everything popular. You don't know how happy I was when I found the mission that let's you shoot these idiots in GTA V.

For real? I have to buy this game.

I typify them as being people who go out of their way to like esoteric things because it makes them feel/look unique. Once something they like becomes popular they tend to swear it off entirely and get all smug about liking it before everyone else. They generally try to project an air of being smarter, funnier and generally better than everyone else.

They also tend to like trucker hats, strange coloured pants, and wide-rimmed glasses.

A label used far too loosely.
