I mean really, do you know it when you hear it.? Is it subjective or objective? (Naw I'm not talking about the Label)

I can't explain it, but it has a lot to do with the song structure. It's very subjective of course; I don't give a damn about technical ability.

Anything that seems like the artist put passion into it. Sometimes however, the the musicians that made the song can generally be unlikable, which may cause me to frown on them.

Of course, Hip-Hop isn't in it. Hip-Hop isn't music, its something far superior.

As for the rest, its subjective.

I mean, there are certain things that aren't, like calling Birdman lyrical, but as for the rest is subjective of course.

And yes, I just called Hip-Hop superior to every single genre out there. Except maybe Classical music, better recognize.

Agreed. Hip-hop isn't music it is a culture with 5 elements those being B-boying, graffiti, turntablism, mc'ing and knowledge of self.

I dig any song with a good bassline. It's all pretty subjective, though.

Solid lyrics that are about the current state of hiphop, Society, Social Order, Crime etc.

Good beats are cool but lyrics are my main thing.

music is good music

  • if it makes you want to get up and dance
  • if it makes you want to sit there and just meditate
  • if it makes you want to call that person up and tell them how you feel about him/her
  • if it makes you want to sing
  • if it causes emotions
  • if it makes you want to hear it again and again and again

@Nelomaxwell: The picture's absolutely hilarious, I know I shouldn't but I'm liking this Cannibus joke far too much. As for Cannibus, I personally wouldn't care as long as he made good LPs/Mixtapes/Music, but that's not the case. If you can write good, then you're a lyricist, there's no need to be a good freestyler. Leave it for those that are. Traphik once said "Telling a rapper he needs to work on his freestyle is like telling a painter he needs to work on his doodling". Something of the sort. I think the analogy works somewhat.

I think that's subjective.

But for me, songs should mean or express something.

You can objectively talk about the formal elements that make up music, which is to say melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, sound colors, etc. I find it easy to say that music that finds exciting, varied, and clever ways of utilizing many of these elements is superior to music that neglects them, relying on basic applications of one or two to carry itself, but this is technically subjective. Lyrics aren't a musical element, they are a poetic one... at best you can claim that phonetic sounds have something to contribute, but the content of a lyric does not contribute to it's musicality. Some lyrics-music relations serve both parties very well, and I wouldn't want to hear one without the other... but they are still separate fields. This is why we have composers and librettists.

I can tell good music when I hear it, and I can tell it from weak music that I enjoy. It's how I know what to to recommend to my musician friends and what not to.

It often sounds like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxljpliziFI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oBGixxuu2E

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejjAFFeobB8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQf9dtrc26A

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2MfbhWYGM8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUgdbqt2ON0

If that helps.

Good music talks to the soul. It awakens passion and takes you where the artist was in his mind when he wrote it. If it's song about ancient battlefields and glorious deeds, then it should take you there to see it in the mind's eye. If it's about, love see the passion and the object. Music should be like a great painting. Everyone listening to it should not be left indifferent.

It's subjective, some say classic jazz and rock is "great" music..but personally, I hate jazz...and many ''classic" rock bands.

Honestly, whatever is on my ipod, I'd call good music....to me.

Zimmer is so badass especially before he got too mainstream. Still very good though. I just feel he's a bit overused nowadays.
