What color is this dress? (Official Poll)

The dress maker already came out and said the dress color. This one looks blue and black.

Yes, I understand the dress in real life has a certain color, but the question is what does the dress as seen in the photo look like?

I answered that in my second sentence. When I said this one I was referring to the pic and not what the dress make said. The pic in the other thread looked white and gold.

It is a test of how the human brain perceives color, but it's not a test of color blindness.

What I want to know is why this pic looks black and blue but the one from the other thread looks white and gold. If they are the same picture what's changed to make it look different?

My thoughts as well. I'm not sure how it looks white and gold from their perspective, but it couldn't possibly look something like this (color-wise).

I thought it was obviously white and gold, I can't see how it could be anything else.

It looks white and gold to me, although with a bluish tint to the white... as if there's some large blue thing offscreen casting some blue bounce lighting on the dress. So, to me it basically looks like a light blue color with gold(ish) stripes. In other words, it looks like a white/gold dress.

I really cant see how it could be perceived as dark blue w/ black stripes. <shrugs> The brain does amazing things to our perception. Colors are judged by context and neighboring colors, not solely by the actual color at each point.

@willpayton: no colours are judged on colours not context,not background but the colour you can see on them, fyi for all the people who voted white and gokd you relize your brain perceives things in the same way as kim kardashian?

It's clearly black and blue.

Not sure if you're trolling, but the brain does indeed judge colors based on many factors including the color and brightness of nearby objects and even the context. The brain is not like a simple image sensor that samples a color at a pixel and then just reports that color alone. It's a very complex neural network that evolved over time, and as such it has a lot of weird things that it does. This dress image and the reactions to it are a perfect example.

@willpayton: so you call me out trolling? It may change the way we percieve colour but no it dosent change the colour end of, and my brain is more complex to fool for simple tricks such as brightness and context simple minds can be easily swayed though

How we perceive colors and how we judge them are basically the same things. It comes down to what the brain thinks it's seeing rather than what light comes into the eyes. Everything that comes into the eyes is processed in some way. There is no such thing as a "simple" or "complex" mind. If there were, then seeing a color just as it comes into the eye would be the "simple" way for the brain to deal with it... which apparently is what you'e claiming to have.

Forced to pick one of the two options, I see it as white and gold, but in reality, the "white" section appears light blue to me and the "gold" appears tan, so I can see three of the four colors I'm supposedly able to see, but I can't understand how anybody sees black. It's clearly tan to me.

@willpayton: just because your wrong and you brain can't tell the difference between black and white tbh i can't believe im still engaging when it is clear and obviously your just trolling becaucse the colour dosent change, colours stay tue same just like i said some simple minds get confused by brightness,background ect ect its nt uncommon for your brain to be tricked seeings as kim karadashian thinks its white and gold too

Seriously. If the first picture appears blue and black to you, are you saying you can't perceive the colour difference between dress 1 and dress 3? Or dress 2 to dress 3 for that matter? They're totally different colours.

ugh it looks white and blue because the dress looks like it's in a shadow, but actually it's black and blue.

Even though I know it's blue and black, I can only see white and gold. Sometimes the white part looks blue, though.

It's actually quite cool to know there are certain things we see diferently. I'm not colour-blind by the way.

I can sort of see both. It looks blue and black, but not definitively, the blue is teetering on white and the black looks gold when I really concentrate on it.

Guys... I'm still only seeing a shower curtain.
