From what I read, there was a mistake in the North American description of Birdo in the Mario Bros. 2 manual. The translation between the versions of the North American version suggest that Birdo is a boy that thinks he's a girl. That wasn't what Nintendo, intended for the character. Now depending on who works on games she's involved in, his\her gender varies. In Mario Tennis SHE is depicted as Yoshi's GIRLFRIEND. Apparently an issue of Nintendo Power describes Birdo as a SHE and in Japanese versions of some games she's featured in, her name is Catherine. All the Voice actors for the character have been female accept one. I think the verdict is still out though because there are still newer games that suggest her gender is male or a mystery.

They change them for the Japanese version because of the Balrog issue. Balrog is M.Bison in the japanese versions of games because his name was originally "Mike Bison" because he's modeled after Mike Tyson, Capcom didn't want Mike to sue..so they change the name for the American version. So in Japanese games he takes Bison's name, Bison takes Vega's, and Vega takes his. Charlie is changed to Nash but that's just his last name.

It's the same thing with Final Fight. The North American version of Final Fight calls Sodom, Katana because of the origin of "sodom", and they made Poison Kiss a transsexual for the U.S. version in order to not appear as if they condoned hitting women, and in the SNES version Poison and Roxy were taken out entirely. I'm not sure if Capcom officially made Poison a tranny or not though, she's in Street Fighter x Tekken and I don't have it.
@Vance Astro: Thanks for the info on Birdo. I didn't know the name changes in Street Fighter were done to avoid a lawsuit with Mike Tyson. That's funny. I know about the Final Fight situation, though.

The first time I played Metroid I had no idea that the character was female......that image is from Brawl which came out a couple of years ago.
Oh ok I thought you meant you still didn't know. I'll give you that orginally I had no idea either. I think it made her a better character in the long run though.

Jerry, in the Tom and Jerry cartoon, will sometimes (a lot of the times) have amped up spikey eyebrows, plus the expression on his face when he's pleading for his life is often really feminine. Really can't blame me for doubting his gender.
Basically the only thing holding it together is his name, otherwise he can easily found his way into the other side, if the fans were convinced.

While Mike Bison is a very obvious parallel to Mike Tyson, I don't think he would have tried to sue them. The character is based on his likenesses, but he doesn't resemble Tyson and his backstory isn't reminiscent of Tyson's either.

What about the episodes in which Jerry had female love interests?
That's not in my brain's hard drive. Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, a lot of the classics I watched when I was super little. I watched plenty of them, but only the episodes I rewatched in later life I'll remember.
