What characters turned out to be the opposite sex?

I just find it very interesting, especially when it's a character you grew up with, I'm not sure if I ever questioned Zero's or Tails's gender when I was a kid, but maybe I did unconsciously have different expectations from these characters. Is it because making a character sculpted to an ideal, iconic, admiring features often results in making the character looks feminine?

Take mythical beings: angels for an instance, I remember taking mythology courses in school and how when cultures imagine being that symbolizes perfection, the result often is a powerful creature with great strength and a terrifically feminine feature. Has the society unconsciously recognized some sort of unisex ultimate existence for human to admire and look forward to in the future?

Here are characters I know which really made the audience guessed their genders:

Tails (Sonic the Hedge Hog)

Zero (Mega Man)

Fisheye (Sailor Moon)

Mello (Death Note)

Kazuki Fuuchouin (Get Backers)

Peppo (Gankutsuou)

Sesshomaru (Inuyasha)

PS Gabriel is neither man nor woman which is why they chose to cast a beautiful woman as the role. They even wrapped up her boobs so we couldn't really tell.

The first time I played Metroid I had no idea that the character was female......that image is from Brawl which came out a couple of years ago.

Oh ok I thought you meant you still didn't know. I'll give you that orginally I had no idea either. I think it made her a better character in the long run though.

Anime characters always look like flamboyant character most of the time they all look like they shop at LV or Hermes for there clothing,

Tweety, Jerry, Flapjack, Spongebob, Beemo, Schrodinger (Hellsing), Nermal and that is all that comes to my mind.

@Static Shock: I've read the same. It's confusing in that both here in the States and also in Japan, Birdo was originally stated to be a male who thought he was a female. I don't know if Nintendo has ever straightened it out.

@0n1zuka: Well, the American sectors of Japanese video game companies (both Capcom and Nintendo, as well as others) have a tendency to rewrite canon when certain games are released here. Street Fighter is a perfect example, as far as Ryu and Ken's fighting style and the names of certain characters.

I've noticed that Japanese game developers are always the ones that tend to play around with the genders of the characters they create. It's even prevalent in animes, too. Not sure why that is, anyway.

ive noticed that most of the charecters that people said were from anime. that is one of the main reasons why i dont watch anime.
