I just find it very interesting, especially when it's a character you grew up with, I'm not sure if I ever questioned Zero's or Tails's gender when I was a kid, but maybe I did unconsciously have different expectations from these characters. Is it because making a character sculpted to an ideal, iconic, admiring features often results in making the character looks feminine?

Take mythical beings: angels for an instance, I remember taking mythology courses in school and how when cultures imagine being that symbolizes perfection, the result often is a powerful creature with great strength and a terrifically feminine feature. Has the society unconsciously recognized some sort of unisex ultimate existence for human to admire and look forward to in the future?

Here are characters I know which really made the audience guessed their genders:

Gabriel (Movie: Constantine)

Angel (Movie: The Prophecy 3)

Tails (Sonic the Hedge Hog)

Zero (Mega Man)

Fisheye (Sailor Moon)

Mello (Death Note)

Kazuki Fuuchouin (Get Backers)

Kurapika (Hunter X Hunter)

Peppo (Gankutsuou)

Sesshomaru (Inuyasha)

What other characters you know can fall into this category?

Tweety Bird.

PS Gabriel is neither man nor woman which is why they chose to cast a beautiful woman as the role. They even wrapped up her boobs so we couldn't really tell.

Oh ok I thought you meant you still didn't know. I'll give you that orginally I had no idea either. I think it made her a better character in the long run though.

 Guilty Gear-Bridget: Poses as a female because he was born a twin of the same gender and it's bad luck in his village, so his parents raised him as a girl.
 Poison Kiss: Final Fight\Street Fighter-Changed into a transsexual because Capcom realized they didn't want to condone hitting women, although Chun-Li and Cammy are in a fighting game and you get to hit them as much as you want.

@Vance Astro: Yeah, has Nintendo ever decided on a gender for Birdo? I knew he was male originally but at some point I remember them trying to change it, and heard that Yoshi and Birdo were dating or something.

I just looked it up. Apparently I was wrong. Birdo isn't a male. Ostro is her male counterpart. The two looked so similar that even Nintendo got mixed up. Birdo is in fact a female.

Samus was believed to be male when she was first created. But, when Metroid was beaten and certain conditions were met, she removes her armor, revealing that she's actually a female.

#36 Posted by Static Shock (47329 posts) - - Show Bio

@Vance Astro: I read that Birdo was a transsexual.

#37 Posted by 0n1zuka (3715 posts) - - Show Bio

@Static Shock: I've read the same. It's confusing in that both here in the States and also in Japan, Birdo was originally stated to be a male who thought he was a female. I don't know if Nintendo has ever straightened it out.

@joewell: you know of any other males that lay eggs?

#40 Posted by Static Shock (47329 posts) - - Show Bio

@0n1zuka: Well, the American sectors of Japanese video game companies (both Capcom and Nintendo, as well as others) have a tendency to rewrite canon when certain games are released here. Street Fighter is a perfect example, as far as Ryu and Ken's fighting style and the names of certain characters.

#41 Posted by 0n1zuka (3715 posts) - - Show Bio

@Static Shock: That's definitely true. Gouken's back-story is a testament to that.

I've noticed that Japanese game developers are always the ones that tend to play around with the genders of the characters they create. It's even prevalent in animes, too. Not sure why that is, anyway.

@0n1zuka said:

Exactly. Ansatsuken sounds better than Shotokan Karate.

Honjo Kamatari from Rurouni Kenshin

@Static Shock: It's been so long since I've seen the original name, that I had forgotten all about it. Ansatsuken sounds so much better.
