Websites are overrated

I was thinking today that really websites are over rated. People spend hours and hours looking at their screens interacting with people they don't know. Go outside.
When is the last time you went for a hike, when is the last time you built something with your hands, when is the last time you were with a group of friends doing some physical activity?  Yes I know a lot of us are on here during "business hours" so it's not like we could be doing something active. But really look at yourself.

Some things to think about:
If the power in you neighborhood were to go out for a month......would you be ok? Some wouldn't even survive!
Could you start a fire, if you didn't have any matches, lighter, ect?
Could you run a mile .....without stopping?

People talk about Zombie attacks or something as a joke right......but what if your country was invaded by another. Could you survive?

Yeah, I mean if websites did not exist where would you go for your daily dose of drama Hawk?

Says the guy with almost 15K posts.

There are somethings I would have no problems with. But others I'd be screwed.

Somethings got to break up the boredom of work. :)

Most of the food I eat requires some sort of power to be prepared/stored but I suppose I could survive off of crackers for a month...not being able to see where I'm walking shouldn't be much of a problem either, I have an iPod to light the way...although it wouldn't be able to charge and I suppose I'd go insane...I suppose all the neighbors in the apartment would be fighting over a generator or something until only one of us is left alive.

Probably couldn't start a fire though, I always use lighters...

Definitely couldn't run a mile without stopping...okay, I could but I'd collapse on the ground afterward for a few minutes and feel like I'm literally going to die for the next half hour, I learned that in gym class. Took me more then ten minutes but I didn't stop running (at least I don't think I did).

Don't think so. Unfortunately we have become too dependant on power in everyday life.
I wouldn't be able to do it without matches or lighters.
Definitely no lol
As for the zombies, no idea lol

Oh and if zombies took over, I'd definitely kill myself pretty early on, assuming I wasn't eaten. I mean I don't think I'd miss other people but all that extra work just to survive a little longer in a post-apocalyptic world? No offense but seems ridiculous IMO.

lazy or I'm not delusional...people who survive in zombie fiction do so because they believe there's a light at the end of the tunnel, there never is...I don't believe in living in a world that's already dead, sure the world's pretty crappy, but if it were dead, there's no point in me hanging around

@Hawk: I spend most of my weeks in the Whiskey Media basement. On the weekend I'm outside all day. Last Saturday I was a the zoo with the kids, then on Sunday I was at the racetrack for NASCAR, got home and took the dogs for a hike around 5pm.

I agree, getting out and seeing the world makes us all more balanced and interesting.

That's what I'm talking about!
People just need to know how to do things.
(sidenote: dude if you don't have them you really need to looking into the Nextel handhelds for NASCAR. Kind of expensive but well worth it if you go every year.)

Lets break these down:
I hate hiking - you rarely have time to focus on the nature and it's never a way to relax. What ever people say.
I hate woodworks mostly because my great-grandfather and father made me do it.
And I hate most, OK all people I come into physical contact with but I hide it really well.
I can survive mostly cause I have loads of books to read.
I can start a fire with two sticks and a string or during the daytime with my glasses.
And I can't run because I have a bad back and bad knees.

I think I'm good.

The real world sucks. 90% of people are complete morons who aren't worth talking to anyway. At least with websites you're able to talk to people of similar interests. The real world is like sifting through grain after grain of sand trying to find the pebble.

I go to the mall regularly with my brother. You walk around the mall a few times and it feels like hiking lol. But seriously hasn't TV overrated the real world? Hmmm yeah everything is overrated really.....Well except stuff that is rated low to begin with.

if it weren't for the Internet, I'd have no interest in people...at least with the Internet you can turn people on and off when you want them

I have done this before as well.  It's fun. It is good that the nearby mall isn't too far away from me.  It also has a movie theater, which is great.

Why would I ever need to run a mile other than to brag that I can?

I own a pair with the microphones.....makes the race so much better to watch. You can see every camera angle, hear whoever you want. I have season passes so it was worth it. $250 a piece.

I agree.  I have some medical equipment that needs electricity to work that I need to use daily to survive... I'd just kill myself and save myself the pain of a slow death or being eaten then eating others.  No one really has hope in a post-apocalyptic world anyway.  At least not for long!

there's some point to what your saying here Hawk, but many people only spend " some " time online, as well, myself and I'm sure others are online, but on more than one place at a time.
Myself I work both on my computer and online, so I stop in here during that process when I can afford a moment. The only thing I can't agree with though is this...

People spend hours and hours looking at their screens interacting with people they don't know.

I know more people online, and even this site better than I do my own family, hence why I justify stopping in to say hello to them.
I don't find this odd in the slightest, nor any kind of a waste of time. Many people get the idea in their heads that the people they talk to online aren't real in a sense, but of course
the opposite is actually true. I'm a very unique person, or to be more honest, most freaks think I'm a freak, and I find that the internet allows me to reach more like minded persons
than I can in my physical location. Otherwise if a person dedicates all of their time to being online, they may have a problem, more so one they need to work out on the other side of
the screen, but theres no fault in needing and having a place to be when they need it, even if that is a large portion of their time.
In my opinion anyways.

Indeed.
I use the internet (amongst other things) to escape from the stress and dangers of the real world.  It's a jungle out there.

I spent 7 years in the Boy Scouts and made Eagle scout, I can start a fire, construct a shelter and I know plenty about survival. A month without power is no big deal to me.

As for an invasion by another country, I'll be in the military in 4 month anyway so it's really 50/50 as to whether or not I'd survive...

#49 Posted by thegreatfour (12967 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago - Show Bio

Power goes out? Go out, and raid Giant Tiger, and the dollar store, and I mean as soon as lights go off. I'm not waiting for everyone else to get the idea.

Zombie invasion?  Hide in the attic with my dads collection of swords. For food I'd once again go to the dollar store, or Giant Tiger. As for warnings, well if the powers out.... I guess I'd just have to always be prepared for a zombie invasion.

Invasion from another country? Who in the helluvit wants to invade Canada? As long as the world doesn't run out of maple syrup the only invasion we need to be worried about is if a country accidentally goes off mark from the US, and lands here.
