was avatar a huge hit mostly because of his special effects?
No, it had a deep story, amazing characters, a premise that has never been done before, and an amazing director.
loljk
Yup. Pretty much what everyone else said. But I'll admit, I DID like the movie for it's special effects.

What else did the movie have going for it?
What else did the movie have going for it?
Nothing it was basically a movie people had seen dozens of time, the only thing that made it great was its graphic, buzz, and the director's name.

Yeah I know it was a rhetorical question xD
Definitely. The first time I saw the movie, it was on the biggest screen I could find and I got completely swept up in the 3D spectacle and I thought it was the greatest movie I had ever seen. Then later I watched it again, and I pretty much completely hated it. I was so enamored with the visual awe that it took me a second viewing to realize it was a bad movie.
The only good character was the helicopter pilot.
And that's only because Cameron cut and pasted a character from one of his actually good movies and stuck her in there.
Anytime I see "Avatar", I think of Aang or Korra...
Which you should
I'm just depressed that stupid light show got more praise than FAR better, smarter and more emotional blockbusters like The Wolfman, the last 2 Star Wars prequels and Book of Eli.

They are the only Avatars that matter.
It's successful for two reasons
1. The buzz that people wouldn't shut up about when it came out
2. It has James Cameron's name on it.

No, Avatar was the same story as Pocahontas. It was unoriginal and bland. Special effects save the movie.

I enjoyed the movie, for both the story and the special effects. I thought it was a pretty awesome movie.

I preferred Disney's Pocahontas, the movie Avatar was based on.
Or Dances with Wolves.
