Today's debt level represents a $45,300 tab for each and everyone in the country.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says failure to increase borrowing authority would be "a catastrophe," perhaps rivaling the financial meltdown of 2008-2009.

Remarkably, nearly half of today's national debt was run up in just the past six years. It soared from $7.6 trillion in January 2005 as President George W. Bush began his second term to $10.6 trillion the day Obama was inaugurated and to $14.02 trillion now. The period has seen two major wars and the deepest economic downturn since the 1930s.

With a $1.7 trillion deficit in budget year 2010 alone, and the government on track to spend $1.3 trillion more this year than it takes in, annual budget deficits are adding roughly $4 billion a day to the national debt. Put another way, the government is borrowing 41 cents for every dollar it spends.

Two ways to fix this. Corporate sponsors, or go to the U.N., look everyone in the eye, and tell them if they want the money, come get some. Add bitches. Really, the delegates call.

Until the US loses a large war, it doesn't matter how big their debt is; they wont need to pay it.

That said, who the **** complains about it? All the people that ***** at the US if they don't give International Aid and alike. Of course you're going to need large military expenditure if you're involved in every countries affairs because if you don't involve yourself, some hippy douche bag organisation condemns you as being unhumanitarian.

@Lance Uppercut: Your second option would mean the complete breakdown of the world economy.  If the USA reneged on its debts, the holders of that debt would sell it off to anyone for anything they could get for it, which in turn would render the US dollar nearly useless.  A lot of the world depends on US dollars for its reserves.  So with the combination of worldwide poverty and probably hyperinflation in the US and everyone loses.  There are better ways to get rid of the debt, but seeing as they are sort of illegal I cant advocate them.

@RazzaTazz: From a technical standpoint, the U.S. dollar is already useless. At the moment, it's considered valuable because the world gives it value. It's not back by a substantial amount of gold, or silver, cocaine, etc.

My country's debt is 2 million...While that seems cool, it just shows that we can't pay back even that little.

I wonder...what the HELL does the government buy that would put the country in that much debt? It's obviously not spent on anything that the country actually needs (i.e. healthcare, education, better infrastructure, new jobs, medical research, etc.). You would think that a country that is trillions of dollars in debt would at least have something to show for it.

What he said, I don't live in the US either, but i'm really feeling the effects of the recession, and what we have now will be nothing compared to what will come if we don't fix it.

I hate it when people try and put the blame on The President for our debt, if it weren't him we'd be in even more debt. We've been in debt for years and we probably always will be.

I found it funny that they are in this much debt, and they still haven't put a lot of money into their educational system. I wonder if they had done, say 20 years ago that them people now would be earning more money and putting more money back into the country.

I think comic fans should rule the world. We clearly discuss things and when we get angry we just post a picture of something funny to make them feel better.

@Lance Uppercut:  It gets even more interesting when you consider that most "money" isn't even material, but simply numbers in a computer. Add that to the fact that most debt is based on credit, and you realize that our entire civilization is largely based upon layers of nothing upon nothing. That certainly makes me want to build a bunker and stock it with guns and beef jerky.
