Marvel's The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Wreck-It Ralph... all solid films that everyone and their mother has seen or at least heard about. It was a huge year for the box office, but quite a few good films were widely overlooked by the general audience. What films do you believe were underrated or overlooked this year... and why do you think that happened?

Some that immediately come to mind for me are The Grey (despite making a profit I feel it's often overlooked), Seven Psychopaths and Dredd.

Oh right, Dredd came out didn't it?

F*ck me, I want to see that.

John Carter. I blame Jennifer Lawrence Hunger Games the marketing for ruining the movie's box office.

The Grey, Safe House, and Savages come to mind at first thought.

Dredd was massively overlooked

Indeed it was.

<3 The Grey. I thought Safe House was alright (gave it a B). Funny side-note: I have a quote on the cover for that film :D

Haven't seen Savages, though.

Nothing underrated or overlooked, but I could easily name an overrated film.

I'd prefer if you didn't since that's not the topic of discussion here.

Yup, John Carter was really, really underrated and overlooked (especially overlooked). I also blame Avatar.

Dredd was also very overlooked.

You know, I think I need to re-watch that one. Thankfully it's streaming on Netflix.

I really enjoyed JC but I understand why opinions are so divided on it.

@k4tzm4n: It is? :o I need to re-watch it as well lol. I'm not usually a huge fan of that whole style of film, but my god, Gina is pretty fcking incredible.

Dredd is way too underrated in my opinion.

Safe House, it wasn't the best action film and it was a bit predictable but it was better than many people thought IMO.

I liked John Carter.

@k4tzm4n: What was your favorite death?

#23 Posted by Xanni15 (5974 posts) - 6 months, 5 days ago - Show Bio

Solomon Kane, End of Watch, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2.

#24 Posted by Razero (335 posts) - 6 months, 5 days ago - Show Bio

I honestly think Amazing Spider-man was overshadowed.

As was already said by a lot of users... Dredd and John Carter.

#27 Posted by JediXMan (22968 posts) - 6 months, 5 days ago - Show Bio

Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

I actually liked that movie...

#28 Posted by CaioTrubat (12000 posts) - 6 months, 5 days ago - Show Bio

@Xanni15: Solomon Kane was actually in 2009...

#29 Posted by CaioTrubat (12000 posts) - 6 months, 5 days ago - Show Bio

@k4tzm4n: On a serious note, I understand why that movie bombed. The trailers made it look like a generic and dull fantasy movie like Immortals and Clash of the Titans before it; dropping all mentions of Mars was a really stupid (and ironic) move. Also the Disney logo really kills any interest in more mature audiences to go see it.

@k4tzm4n: The Grey was underrated? Interesting didn't get to see it, but since it's now on Netflix I plan on checking it out. :P

Life of Pi was visually stunning and had a great plot. Don't see many talk about this movie anywhere even though imo it was amazing.

#32 Posted by k4tzm4n (30972 posts) - 6 months, 5 days ago - Show Bio

@PlasticBag: Well, to be fair Life of Pi doesn't even come out until tomorrow in the United States.

I didn't list The Grey, others did and I just remarked that I really liked it :)

@CaioTrubat: Yeah, the fault was definitely the marketing.

It was released on Europe much earlier than the USA. But still was much earlier than 2012.

The Grey and Dredd for sure. I'm honestly surprised in how much I liked Dredd. It was fantastic.

#35 Posted by Gambit1024 (9878 posts) - 6 months, 5 days ago - Show Bio

I'll even go so far as giving Amazing Spider-Man a shout out. While it wasn't completely overlooked, I really thought it was better than some of the more overrated movies this year, despite its flaws (which I entirely blame Sony for).

#36 Posted by PlasticBag (1222 posts) - 6 months, 5 days ago - Show Bio

@k4tzm4n: Ahh okay and I was able to see an early showing of Life of Pi didn't realize it wasn't released yet. The hype for it is kind of lackluster to be fair though.

In America it was released in 2012, and as the USA is the only country which matters I'll be going by that. :P The initial release of SK was in 09, but the initial release of The Grey and Haywire were in 2011.

Dredd's budget: $50 mil
Dredd's box office in the US: $13,414,714
(International:$15,125,288)

Yeah, it didn't do very well financially ;)
