Back in February, we reported that Activision had canceled the scheduled 2011 edition of Guitar Hero and True Crime: Hong Kong so as to "to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world's best interactive entertainment experiences".

Today, True Crime: Hong Kong has returned to life, like some kind of benevolent gaming zombie, thanks to Square Enix who has picked up and will be publishing the game.

In an exclusive interview to Gamasutra, Square Enix London Studios general manager Lee Singleton said:

When we first saw and got our hands on (True Crime: Hong Kong) we fell in love with it... It's one of those games where you don't want to put the controller down; it's what we call 'sticky'.

While the game may be rescued, the name may not transfer with it, as Square Enix only picked up the rights to this specific game, not the entire True Crime IP. Singleton mentions that it's still too early to say what the game's new title might be, but that it will be "pretty straightforward".

Square Enix did not comment on a release date or window at this time.

Seems like Square is starting to load up on big franchises with the Hitman and Tomb Raider stuff. I hope they pull this off well.

Yes but I mean they've been greedy with money for a decade now.

So they're trying to become the Japanese version of Electronic Arts and Activision.

Last time I checked both of these companies were terrible and totally greedy.

@Samimista: Companies who become like EA and Acti will be hated by their fans.

Used to love both of those publishers since they brought out Battlefield and Call of Duty, now.....Despise them and military shooters in general.
