I was at the Cheesecake Factory with a friend. I told him that you should only tip the waiter whatever percent you want off of the cost of the meal only, not the meal plus the tax total.

I said why would I tip including the tax of the meal when that's what the government is charging me, not the restaurant. A lot of people just go along and tip including the tax and that only helps the restaurant and it's wasted money on your part.

Discuss.

1) if you don't mind. What is the most you've spent on a family meal?

2) I applaud you because i wouldn't even go out to dinner with that size family

@pooty: myself, wife, and all seven goblins we can get out under $200 sometimes but not all the time.if I'm driving, wife tends to drink so that's like a big bump on the bill.

Tips are normally calculated pre-tax by most people who I've had meal experiences with.

I usually try to tip about 20 percent because I know that being a waiter isn't easy. Anyone who can deal with unpleasant people all day, such as me, deserves something extra. If the service is bad, though, I'll just tip 15 percent.

of course people should tip in the mean time, but i think the practice of tipping should be done away with. raise the fed min wage and make it so the waiters/waitresses get paid the same min wage as everyone else

Most of the time I pay by card so I don’t have to tip ^_^.

I just tip whatever. I don't bring out my calculator when I'm in a restaurant.

It's different in America.

But when I traveled to America, I did not tip. If the waitress flirts, I am inclined to not tip even more.

I usually round up to the nearest 5 if its under 40, 10 if its over 40.

I've only paid over 100 for a meal once (I got laid as a result ;)) Iric the bill was something like 130 something and I just paid 150.

This tipping business works differently in Croatia. Like if the meal was 17, 18 or 19 euros I just leave 20 and say "it's alright", but I never tip the round numbers.

This. In Canada, you just match the taxes.
