Completely unnecessary, yes, but you have to look at it from a business perspective
As a fan of the original and not an employee of Sony Picture Classics, I have the luxury of not giving a damn about the approach from their eyes and can happily live in the narrow mindset of "there's no way in hell it'll be as good and for me, there's no reason at all for this to exist." Just like everything else, I'll wait until the trailer to truly judge, but The Raid not only raised the bar, but I believe it uppercut it through the roof. Meeting that expectation (for fans of the first) and duplicating the superb quality is going to be a herculean feat (if not impossible).
Sadly, it's not that big in America (I've been trying desperately to spread the word of how great it is, and thankfully it's expanding more and more), so I can only hope the remake creates new fans, who in turn will actively seek out watching the original.
But hold up... Mark Wahlberg?!
